Paraguay’s Plan — Suffocate France, Survive Until Penalties
Nobody gave Paraguay a chance coming into this match. France were the favourites, the talent on paper was not close, and the expectation was a comfortable French win built on Mbappé’s pace, Dembélé’s movement, and Olise’s creativity. What happened in Philadelphia was something else entirely: the most physical, combustible match of the FIFA World Cup 2026™ so far, and a French victory that felt considerably more uncomfortable than a 1-0 scoreline suggests.
Paraguay arrived with a plan that made no concessions to ambition. Their 5-4-1 told you everything — this was not a team that came to play football. With five defenders and a flat midfield four, they compressed every central channel France tried to use. Possession was handed to France almost immediately and deliberately: 22% for Paraguay without contest. Zero shots on target. This was the plan. Deny Mbappé, Olise, and Dembélé any space to operate; frustrate the most skilled attacking unit in the tournament for 90 minutes; and take your chances from a set piece or, if necessary, in a penalty shootout. Paraguay had done it against Germany in the round of 32. They believed they could do it again.
For long stretches, they were right. Mbappé dropped as deep as the centre circle to try to receive the ball and carry through the press — the sign of a striker who has been starved of service. Olise shifted to the right wing, Dembélé moved into a more central position, trying to create something from crosses that France barely managed to execute. Nothing worked. The 5-4-1 held. France had all the ball and almost nothing to show for it.
The Controversy — and the Goal
France were booked three times. Paraguay were booked zero times. This will be debated long after today’s match. Paraguay committed fouls — deliberately, consistently, and often cynically — that disrupted France’s rhythm every time they came close to breaking through. The referee’s management of the physical contest was uneven at best. France’s frustration was legitimate, and the yellow cards they received were issued to players who had been provoked repeatedly. The French players maintained calm throughout the match, often laughing. This was tactics as well.
The decisive moment came from the bench. Didier Deschamps introduced Désiré Doué, the 21-year-old forward, in place of Bradley Barcola. Doué took the ball on the left, drove at Paraguay’s defensive block, and dribbled past three players before Diego Gómez brought him down. The ball was already beyond Gómez — it was a clear foul, the kind that requires no debate. VAR confirmed it. Dembélé stood at the penalty spot taking the brunt from the Paraguayan players. Gustavo Velázquez stepped in and aggressively dug his studs into the penalty spot, desperate to ruin the turf and compromise the shot. But nothing worked. Mbappé arrived late, completely focused.
The penalty went in. Seven goals in this FIFA World Cup 2026™, matching Lionel Messi’s single-tournament record from the 2022 Qatar World Cup. Mbappé leads the Golden Boot race alone. France are in the quarter-finals.

The Verdict
Paraguay played almost the perfect defensive game. They frustrated France for 90 minutes, nullified Mbappé, Dembélé, and Olise with a discipline that very few sides at this tournament could have matched. One act of individual brilliance from a 21-year-old substitute, and one moment of defensive desperation, ended it. France are through, but Deschamps will know his side was unable to break open the Paraguay defence. Their quarter-final match is against Morocco, known for its defensive capabilities. Morocco will not play this type of football, but their defence and strategy might be just as strong, if not stronger.
