Argentina vs Egypt
FIFA World Cup 2026

Round of 16 | Atlanta Stadium | Tuesday, 7 July — 9:30 PM IST

How They Line Up

Egypt — 4-2-3-1

Mostafa Shoubir in goal. Karim Hafez at left-back, Yasser Ibrahim and Ramy Rabia as the centre-back pairing, Mohamed Hany at right-back. Hamdy Fathy and Marawan Attia form the double pivot — both sitting deep when Argentina have the ball, protecting the central lane. Mostafa Zico from the left, Emam Ashour centrally, Mohamed Salah from the right of the attacking three. Omar Marmoush leads the line.

Salah doesn’t operate as a striker here. He receives in the right half-space, between Argentina’s midfield and back four, turns, and drives. That makes him a tracking problem for the eights rather than the centre-backs — a far more complicated assignment. When Egypt win the ball, Marmoush runs deep, and Salah arrives in behind. The plan is not possession. It’s structure and transition.

Argentina — 4-1-2-3

Emiliano Martínez in goal. Facundo Medina at left-back, Lisandro Martínez and Cristian Romero as the centre-back pairing, Nahuel Molina at right-back. Alexis Mac Allister sits as the sole defensive pivot. Enzo Fernández and Rodrigo De Paul operate as the two eights. Thiago Almada from the left, Lautaro Martínez through the centre, Lionel Messi from the right.

The fullbacks provide the width — Medina and Molina push high — while Messi and Almada tuck inside and combine with the advancing eights. With Mac Allister anchoring, Fernández and De Paul have licence to arrive late into the area. Messi on the right means he’s operating directly against Egypt’s left — Hafez, Zico, and whatever Fathy can provide in cover. That matchup is the centre of gravity for the entire match.

The Battles That Will Decide This Match

Messi vs Egypt’s left flank — Hossam Hassan has spent the most preparation time on this problem, and there’s no clean answer to it. Messi won’t hold the right wing — he drifts inside into the half-space, drawing Hafez with him and freeing Molina to overlap behind. Egypt’s cover option is Fathy stepping across from the pivot. But the moment Fathy moves, the central lane opens for Lautaro’s run. Hold shape for Lautaro, and Messi gets the half-space. Press Messi, and Lautaro is free. No team in this tournament has found the solution. Egypt will be the next to try.

Salah vs Argentina’s midfield cover — Egypt’s primary goal threat comes not from the front but from Salah arriving in the right half-space between Mac Allister’s line and Argentina’s back four. Fernández or De Paul must track him — but both are needed going forward. Mac Allister’s positioning becomes the decisive question: if he sits deeper to cut the passing lane into Salah, Egypt’s double pivot gains more freedom to build. If Mac Allister pushes higher to press Fathy and Attia, Salah finds space behind him. One wrong step, and Salah is turned and running.

Tactical Breakdown

Argentina’s 4-1-2-3 is built for possession and wide control. The fullbacks push forward, the eights arrive late, and the front three interchange to pull Egypt’s block out of shape. Egypt will accept possession, sit compact, and wait — the 4-2-3-1 becoming a 4-4-2 without the ball, Salah dropping into midfield to close the central lane.

When Egypt recovers possession, the counter is immediate. Marmoush runs depth against Romero and Lisandro. Salah drives into central space. Zico holds his width to pin Molina. Argentina’s centre-backs — both aggressive by nature — will be tempted forward as the match opens up. That’s the moment Egypt are waiting for: one high defensive line, one ball over the top, and Marmoush running.

The Decisive Factor

Mac Allister carries the weight of Argentina’s defensive structure alone. As the sole pivot, he must protect the central lane, track Salah’s half-space arrivals, and prevent Fathy and Attia from playing through balls into the counter. Fernández and De Paul are higher — they can drop, but not always in time. If Mac Allister reads the match correctly, Argentina’s front three are fed uninterrupted, and the scoreline will reflect that. If he misjudges a press or loses Salah’s run once — in a match this tight, once may be enough.
