Mumbai Apr 22 PTI Scores of commuters in Mumbai faced inconvenience on Friday morning as over 170 mini buses operated by the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport BEST remained off roads in the city following a flash strike by a section of drivers over salary issue an official saidThe BEST tried to reduce the passengers woes by diverting buses in the affected areas he saidAgitated over non-payment of salary the employees of BESTs private contractor firm - MP Group - refused to operate the buses and as a result 175 mini buses from Vikhroli Wadala and Bandra depots did not ply the BEST official saidBEST undertaking provides bus services in Mumbai and it is the second biggest mode of public transport in the city after the suburban local trains Presently it ferries over 30 lakh commuters with its fleet of around 3500 buses including those hired from different private contractorsOn Thursday morning too a section of employees of the BESTs private contractor had refused to operate buses over the same issue However they had called off their agitation after the officials held talks with themOn Friday a number of passengers faced inconvenience due to the sudden strike Those inconvenienced included patients visiting KEM and TATA hospitals who take mini buses after getting down from suburban trains at Parel and Dadar stationsIn order to reduce the inconvenience faced by people BEST diverted buses from other depots and also operated 86 own buses from other depots BEST spokesperson Manoj Varade said adding that action will be taken against the private contractor for violation of the contract terms and conditionsFour out of the five depots from which the mini buses of the contractor operated were affected due to the flash strike he saidOut of 275 mini buses of the MP group 201 remained in depots he said adding that the drivers of the MP group called off the strike late afternoon PTI KK NP ARU ARU

Maha govt orders high-level probe into power outage in parts of Mumbai

Mumbai Feb 27 PTI A high-level probe has been ordered after many parts of Mumbai faced a power outage on Sunday morning Maharashtra Energy Minister Nitin Raut said Many areas in the financial capital including residential pockets of Dadar Matunga Sion among others experienced power disruption for over an hour in the morning The power started getting restored from 11 AM officials had said The power outage also resulted in the halting of local train services on the Western Railway line between Churchgate and Andheri stations In a statement Raut said that he was in constant touch throughout the day with concerned officials including those from Tata Power I instructed the officials to ensure restoration of the power supply at the earliest and also took stock of the work in progress at regular intervals The power supply was restored in 70 minutes The government has taken serious note of the incident and a high-level probe has been ordered Those found guilty will be punished the minister said Earlier in the day officials had blamed supply disruption from Tata Power for the difficulties The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport BEST the civic power and transport undertaking which supplies power to the island city said there was tripping of a 220 kV transmission line from Mulund to Trombay which resulted in its consumers not getting power Power outages are rare in Mumbai and its satellite towns with the power grids equipped to supply electricity 24 hours PTI MR NSK NSK

Mumbai Feb 27 PTI Many parts of Mumbai faced a power outage on Sunday morning which also resulted in the halting of local train services on one of the lines officials said After over an hour of disruption the power supply which had been impacted in south and central Mumbai started getting restored from around 11 am The local train services considered as the lifeline of the countrys financial capital were halted for an hour on the Western Railway line between Churchgate and Andheri stations from 950 am officials said They blamed supply disruption from Tata Power for the difficulties and said services on the line were fully restored by 1053 am Train services on the Central Railways Harbour Line had also halted for a few minutes before resuming officials said adding that the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in south Mumbai also faced a power outage Residential pockets of Dadar Matunga Sion among others reported power outage in the morning The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport BEST the civic power and transport undertaking which supplies power to the island city said there was a tripping of a 220 kV transmission line from Mulund to Trombay which resulted in its consumers not getting power In a statement a Tata Power spokesperson blamed the Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Companys line from Kalwa in neighbouring Thane to Trombay that caused massive voltage fluctuations causing the tripping of its Trombay Salsette-1 unit However Tata Powers Hydro plants were intact and the Bhira Hydro Plant got islanded and synchronised The electricity has been restored by Tata Power the spokesperson added Usually railway authorities carry out maintenance works mid-day on weekends for a certain time due to which travellers advance their journeys The disruption on Sunday ended up aggravating their woes Notably Mumbai is safeguarded from any disruptions in power supply in the rest of the state or country The city had last faced a major outage in October 2020 which took over 18 hours for the full restoration of services and was blamed on a cyber attack in some quarters PTI KK AA GK GK

Mumbai Jan 25 PTI The civic-run Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport BEST undertaking will procure 900 air conditioned double decker buses on wet lease an official said on Tuesday Wet leases are ones in which the buses are owned by private contractors who also appoint their drivers as well as take care of maintenance and insurance The decision was taken in the BEST Committee meeting held during the day he said adding that the 900 buses will hired for 12 years at a rate of Rs 5660 per kilometre At present BEST has a fleet of 3377 buses including 48 double decker ones most of which have completed their codal life 1524 on wet lease and 386 electric buses Successful bidders will have to supply 25 per cent of the 900 bus deal within 12 months and rest within 18 months he said PTI KK BNM BNM BNM
