It is the story of Tara and Sakina developing a deep bond of love and understanding, transcending the religious and cultural barriers that divide them. However, their love story faces numerous challenges and obstacles, including the disapproval of their respective communities and the tense political climate of the time. This superhit movie was theatrically released on June 15, 2001. After the film's release, it became one of the most successful Indian films and the second-most-viewed Hindi films.

Set against the backdrop of the Partition of India, the film follows Tara Singh, a Sikh truck driver, who falls in love with Sakina Ali, a Muslim girl from an affluent family. The story unfolds as Sikhs and Hindus are attacked by Muslims during their migration from West Punjab, Pakistan, to India.
In retaliation, Sikhs and Hindus target Muslims migrating from East Punjab, India, to Pakistan. Amidst the ensuing religious tensions, Tara initially contemplates violence but changes his mind when he recognizes Sakina and protects her from a violent mob. As their love grows, they get married and start a family.
However, when Sakina discovers her parents are alive, she travels to Lahore to meet them. Sadly, she is prevented from returning to India as her father plans to arrange her marriage in Pakistan and asks her to leave behind her old life, leaving Tara and their son yearning for her return.
