Draupathi revolves around the efforts made by a young social activist who goes by the name of Draupathi and how she tries to bring a change in her village viz-a-viz the caste system. The movie is based on the caste system and how it is misused in modern society. It tackles the theme of inter-caste marriages, of how love between two individuals coming from different communities, especially communities that have a sense of hierarchy, may be false.
The movie also covers many controversial topics. One of the topics is that when a marriage is carried out between people of two different hierarchical communities, it is not always genuine. It has tried to show that there are people who carry out illegal activities in the name of inter-caste marriages. The movie generated controversy due to its views and theme and was not very well received by the critics
