Cautious Start, Colombia with the Ball

Neither side came out looking to gamble. Colombia kept possession in the early exchanges — organised and patient — but without the penetration to threaten Kobel in the Swiss goal. Switzerland sat compact and disciplined, content to let Colombia circulate and wait for the moment to press. The first twenty minutes produced no clear openings for either side.

Kobel — Switzerland’s Last Line of Defense

The first real chance of the match fell to Colombia in the 22nd minute. Gustavo Puerta found space on the left side of the box and launched a powerful right-footed strike. Gregor Kobel threw himself full length to his right, got both hands to it, and turned it away. A save that kept the deadlock intact and served notice that Switzerland’s goalkeeper would need to be at his best.

Switzerland Hit Back — Vargas Responds

Switzerland shifted their approach after the half hour, pushing higher and looking to force mistakes. In the 30th minute, Fabian Rieder drove a fierce strike from the left side of the box — Camilo Vargas parried it away cleanly. Two minutes later, Dan Ndoye created space on the right and sent a stinging low drive toward the bottom corner. Vargas dived to his left and cleared the bounce. Two saves in three minutes. Colombia’s goalkeeper matched Kobel’s effort precisely.

Díaz — The Moment of Imagination

The half’s most ambitious moment came in the 39th minute. Luis Díaz attempted a bicycle kick inside the box — the kind of attempt that would have been the goal of the tournament had it connected cleanly. Denis Zakaria tracked him tightly enough to throw off his balance. The contact was incomplete. Puerta met the rebound, but his effort went wide. Colombia’s best creative moment — rewarded with nothing.

Half-Time: Switzerland 0–0 Colombia

The numbers tell a partial story. Colombia edged expected goals: 0.25 to 0.06 — meaning their opportunities have been of higher quality. Colombia’s two saves from Vargas arrived from distance rather than truly dangerous positions. The pattern suggests Colombia have the more threatening attack, but the Swiss defensive organisation has given away very little.

One goal changes everything here. The quarter-final spot against Argentina awaits the winner. Forty-five minutes to settle it.
