The Hindi film industry has lost one of its most cherished and dependable character artists. Mushtaq Khan, whose iconic comic timing and natural screen presence elevated countless Bollywood classics, passed away on September 24, 2026, in Mumbai.

From his unforgettable portrayal of Ballu in Welcome—a role that lives on through viral internet memes—to his memorable performances in Aashiqui, Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, and the Gadar franchise, Mushtaq Khan left an indelible mark on Indian cinema.

A Courageous Battle Against Cancer

Mushtaq Khan passed away at Nanavati Hospital in Mumbai, where he had been receiving care in the ICU. According to his long-time business partner Shivam, the actor had been diagnosed with lung cancer five years ago. Though he initially beat the disease, it recently relapsed and spread to his liver. Despite fighting till the very end with resilience, the veteran actor breathed his last surrounding the love of his family and close companions. He is survived by his wife, Salma Khan, and his children.

From Stage to Screen: A Four-Decade Journey

Mushtaq Khan’s journey in Indian entertainment spanned over forty years. Born in the town of Baihar in Madhya Pradesh, he began his career in theatre before moving to Mumbai to pursue acting.

His big break came through sheer talent and a stroke of chance. Veteran writer Salim Khan happened to watch Mushtaq perform in a play and was so impressed by his talent that he recommended him to filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt. That recommendation led to his role in Kabzaa (1988), initiating a fruitful collaboration with Bhatt on classics such as Aashiqui (1990), Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin (1991), Sadak (1991), and Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (1993).

Over the course of his four-decade career, Khan built a diverse filmography featuring over a hundred films, including:

  • Comedy Standards: Hera Pheri (2000), Jodi No. 1 (2001), Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004), Welcome (2007), and Welcome Back (2015).
  • Blockbuster Dramas & Action: Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001), Wanted (2009), Rowdy Rathore (2012), and Gadar 2 (2023).
  • Modern Favorites: Stree (2018), Badhaai Do (2022), and Stree 2 (2024).

He was equally active on Indian television, earning praise for roles in popular shows such as Bharat Ek Khoj (1988), Zabaan Sambhal Ke (1993), Adaalat (2010), Bhabhijii Ghar Par Hain!, and web series like TVF Tripling.

The Scene Stealer Dialogue of Welcome: “Meri Ek Taang Nakli Hai…”

Though he rarely played the lead, Mushtaq Khan possessed the rare ability to steal a scene even when sharing the frame with superstars.

Nowhere was this more evident than in Anees Bazmee’s 2007 comedy hit Welcome. Playing Ballu, a henchman in Uday Shetty’s (Nana Patekar) gang, Khan delivered a hilarious monologue about being a former hockey player:

“Meri ek taang nakli hai, main hockey ka bahot bada khiladi tha…”

That single scene became an evergreen piece of pop culture history. Years after the film’s release, the dialogue remains widely shared as meme templates across social media platforms, cementing his legacy with younger generations of viewers.

Tributes Pour In

As news of his passing broke, tributes from fans, colleagues, and industry veterans began flooding social media.

Comedian-actor Sunil Pal shared a heartfelt homage online, writing, “RIP Mushtaq Khan saab.” Co-stars remembered him not only for his flawless comedic timing and versatility, but also for his humility, warmth, and supportive nature on set.

The Enduring Legacy of a Character Actor

In an era where stars often dominate the spotlight, character actors like Mushtaq Khan provide the foundational backbone of Bollywood cinema. They bring authenticity, warmth, and humor to the screen, turning simple scenes into timeless memories.

Mushtaq Khan’s legacy will live on through the laughter he brought into millions of homes. Rest in peace, Mushtaq Khan saab—Indian cinema will miss your incredible light.
