Germany vs Ivory Coast: FIFA World Cup 2026™ Match Preview

FIFA World Cup 2026

Group Stage | Group E

Toronto Stadium  |  Sunday, 21 June — 1:30 AM (IST)

Match overview

Both sides arrive in Toronto with three points. Germany demolished Curaçao 7–1 in Houston, with six players on the scoresheet in a display that underlined just how formidable this attack can be. Ivory Coast earned a harder-fought 1–0 win over Ecuador: Amad Diallo’s 90th-minute winner at Philadelphia Stadium came after Ecuador had struck the woodwork three times. The Elephants won ugly. Germany won emphatically. Sunday’s match will tell us who is the real force in Group E.

Team analysis

Germany

Julian Nagelsmann’s side were simply irresistible against Curaçao. Seven goals, six scorers, relentless pressing, and a display that highlighted the depth of a formidable squad. Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala, and Kai Havertz form one of the tournament’s most gifted attacking trios. Wirtz — who joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen last summer for a record British fee — drifted between the lines and was impossible to pin down. Havertz scored twice, including a penalty. Musiala added a fourth in the 47th minute. Nathaniel Brown (Eintracht Frankfurt) scored and assisted on debut from left-back.

Key player: Florian Wirtz — Twenty-three years old and a Liverpool player after a transfer that smashed British records. At Bayer Leverkusen, Wirtz was the creative hub of their historic unbeaten Bundesliga season. He creates from deep, arrives late into the box, and finishes with either foot. Ivory Coast will need a plan to stop him — and there’s no easy one.

Ivory Coast

Emerse Fae’s side did what good tournament teams do: they won without being at their best. Ecuador outshot them, outpossessed them, and hit the woodwork three times — but Ivory Coast stayed composed, stayed organised, and took their chance when Amad Diallo arrived at the back post in the 90th minute. The Elephants have genuine quality throughout the squad. Ousmane Diomandé anchors the defensive line, with Seko Fofana providing the supply from the midfield. Yoan-Ange Bonny, only recently switched from France U21, adds a different dimension up front.

Key player: Amad Diallo — The Manchester United winger was the decisive player on Matchday 1: clinical where Ecuador were wasteful, composed when the moment mattered most. He is quick, direct, and difficult to contain in one-on-one situations. Against Germany’s attacking-minded fullbacks, there could be space for Amad to exploit on the counter. If Ivory Coast are going to cause Germany problems, it will likely start with him.

Head-to-head record

Germany and Ivory Coast have met only once in competitive football, and this is their first meeting at a FIFA World Cup. The head-to-head record is thin. What Sunday offers is largely uncharted territory — which makes the tactical matchup in Toronto all the more intriguing.

Tactical preview

Ivory Coast will need to be far more disciplined than their previous match. Nagelsmann’s side punished every pocket of space against Curaçao, and against a more conservative team they will probe for openings through Wirtz and Musiala, who drift into the channels. Fae is likely to set up with a compact mid-block and rely on Amad and Bonny to cause damage on the counter. Germany’s fullbacks push very high, which creates the exact space Ivory Coast will want to target.

Key storylines

  • Germany’s depth on full display — six different scorers against Curaçao, including Brown on debut and a brace from Havertz. Against a proper defensive unit, Nagelsmann will need patience, but the range of options available to him is genuinely extraordinary.
  • Amad’s moment to deliver again — his 90th-minute winner against Ecuador was one of the early moments of this tournament. He now faces Germany’s high defensive line with pace and directness that can genuinely test any backline. Whether he can produce the same decisive impact against a more organised opponent is the most compelling individual question of this match.
  • Ivory Coast’s giant-killing credentials — Fae’s side won the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil and have a squad packed with European club talent. They won’t be intimidated by Germany. If they can frustrate Nagelsmann’s side for the first hour and keep it tight, their quality in transition gives them a genuine path to a result.

Prediction and verdict

Germany are clearly the stronger side, and the Curaçao result sends a clear signal to Group E. But Ivory Coast are organised and dangerous on the counter — Amad will cause problems throughout. Nagelsmann’s side should edge it, but this won’t be as comfortable as Houston suggested.
