After rotating through 5-3-2 for the Australia game — with Almirón suspended — Paraguay are expected to return to their 4-4-2 for the R32. Orlando Gill in goal; Juan Cáceres, Omar Alderete, Gustavo Gómez (captain), Júnior Alonso across the back. Miguel Almirón on the right of midfield, Andrés Cubas and Matías Galarza in the centre — Diego Gómez is suspended. Julio Enciso, alongside a second forward, likely Isidro Pitta or Antonio Sanabria.

The Battles That Will Decide This Match
Florian Wirtz vs Juan Cáceres — Wirtz operates from Germany’s left and will face Cáceres as Paraguay’s right back in the primary defensive duel. Cáceres is a composed, experienced defender, but Wirtz’s habit of drifting inside rather than staying wide makes him hard to track positionally. When Wirtz cuts inside, Cáceres must decide whether to follow him into central areas — which leaves the channel open for Sané to switch and exploit — or hold his position and concede the inside lane. Paraguay’s right side will be tested repeatedly.
Jamal Musiala vs Andrés Cubas / Matías Galarza — Musiala in the number ten role is Germany’s most unpredictable attacker in central areas. Cubas and Galarza replace the suspended Diego Gómez as Paraguay’s midfield shield, tasked with limiting Musiala’s time on the ball and disrupting his combination play with Wirtz. Cubas is aggressive and well-organised; Galarza is dynamic but younger and less experienced in these moments. If Musiala finds space to turn and drive, Paraguay’s defensive block loses its shape almost immediately.
Julio Enciso vs Jonathan Tah / Antonio Rüdiger — Paraguay’s primary counter-attacking weapon faces Germany’s central defensive pairing. Enciso drops deep to collect the ball and then drives forward at pace — it’s the move that caused the USA backline problems even in a 4-1 defeat for Paraguay. Tah and Rüdiger are both commanding defenders, but Rüdiger is slightly less comfortable being dragged wide on transition than he is in a straight defensive line. If Paraguay can get Enciso running at him in space, it’s the scenario Germany would least prefer.
Leroy Sané vs Júnior Alonso — Germany’s right channel pits Sané’s pace and directness against Alonso at left back. Alonso is a competent, physical defender, but tends to be positional rather than explosive — Sané’s acceleration in the first few yards is among the quickest in this tournament. Kimmich overlapping behind Sané adds a second problem for Alonso to manage simultaneously. If Paraguay commit their midfield to defending the centre, Sané and Kimmich, in combination on the right, will have room to create.
Tactical Breakdown
The central tactical question: can Paraguay’s 4-4-2 block — without Gómez as the creative link — remain organised for 90 minutes against Germany’s press and movement? Germany will look to overload the central lanes through Pavlović’s forward carries and Musiala’s movement, forcing Paraguay’s midfield to shift repeatedly and creating the gaps for Wirtz and Sané to enter from wider positions.
Paraguay’s best moments will come in transition. When Germany presses, and the ball breaks to Almirón or Enciso in space, their pace on the counter gives them a genuine threat. Germany’s back four — particularly with Rüdiger still settling into the role after Schlotterbeck’s injury — will need to hold their defensive line carefully when that happens. One high line miscalculation and Paraguay have a chance.
The Decisive Factor
If Wirtz and Musiala connect as they did against Curaçao, Paraguay will be chasing the game before the hydration break. And a Paraguay side missing Gómez, chasing a goal against a team with Germany’s quality, is a very different proposition from the compact defensive unit that held Australia 0-0. The longer this stays level, the more relevant Almirón and Enciso’s counter-attacking speed becomes. Get in front early, and Germany wins comfortably.
