Just 21 seconds into the match — barely time for the crowd to settle — Kylian Mbappé charged up the right flank and unleashed a strike that crashed against the crossbar. It did not last. Dembélé added a third before the half-hour mark, completing what would be confirmed as the second-fastest hat-trick in World Cup history. He received the ball inside the box, evaded three Norwegian defenders in a tight space, shifted it to his left, and placed it inside the right-hand post. The 32-minute hat-trick was complete. Boston had witnessed something genuinely rare.

Penalty Miss Keeps Norway at Bay (49′)
The second half offered Norway a route back. Théo Hernández caught Oscar Bobb inside the penalty box, and the referee pointed to the spot. Jørgen Strand Larsen stepped up — but his tame effort went straight down the middle, and Maignan saved it comfortably. Norway’s best opportunity to put any meaningful pressure on France was gone. The match, at that point, was effectively settled.
Doué Seals It in Stoppage Time (90+4′)
Deep into added time, substitute Bradley Barcola produced brilliant footwork down the left, cut the ball back and clipped a pinpoint cross into the box. Désiré Doué climbed highest and guided a precise header into the corner — his first-ever World Cup goal, and France’s fourth. Final score: France 4-1 Norway.

The Bigger Picture
Norway coach Ståle Solbakken made no attempt to hide his intentions. Haaland, Ødegaard, and many other first-choice starters were rested with both sides already through to the Round of 32 before kickoff. France’s tactical depth was simply too much for a depleted Norwegian XI. France is at the top of Group I with a perfect record. Norway go through as runners-up and will face Côte d’Ivoire in the Round of 32. For Dembélé, this was a performance for the ages — a hat-trick that arrives only a handful of times in a generation.
