A day of records, history and late drama. Harry Kane equalled Gary Lineker’s England record of 10 World Cup goals. DR Congo scored their first-ever goal at a FIFA World Cup 2026™ — and so did Uzbekistan, on the very same day. Ghana grabbed a 95th-minute winner. England thrashed Croatia 4–2. It is only Day 7 of the group stage, and the tournament is already delivering more than anyone could have scripted.
Portugal 1–1 DR Congo | Group K
Cristiano Ronaldo arrived in Houston for his sixth FIFA World Cup 2026™ appearance — a record he shares with only a handful of players in the sport’s history. Portugal dominated possession (68%) and took an early lead through João Neves, whose clinical header from a Pedro Neto cross settled the ball in the net just six minutes in.
What followed was a lesson in resilience. DR Congo defended with organisation and discipline, limited Portugal to just seven shots across 90 minutes, and struck back in the fifth minute of first-half stoppage time. Arthur Masuaku’s cross from the left found Yoane Wissa arriving at the back post; his close-range header made it 1–1 and gave DR Congo something no Congolese team has ever had before — a goal at a FIFA World Cup 2026™. The first in their history.
Portugal pushed hard in the second half. Ronaldo had two clear opportunities in the 68th and 74th minutes and could not convert either. A cancelled overhead kick from João Cancelo. Bruno Fernandes dragged a late shot wide. The final whistle blew at 1–1. Group K is open.
England 4–2 Croatia | Group L
Four goals in the first half. A Harry Kane brace. Jude Bellingham’s decisive second-half strike. Marcus Rashford off the bench to seal it. England’s 4–2 win over Croatia at the Dallas Stadium was everything a FIFA World Cup 2026™ match should be — breathless, brilliant, and bookended by moments that will be talked about for years.
Kane opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 12th minute after Luka Modrić brought down Noni Madueke in the box. Dominik Livaković saved the first attempt but was penalised for stepping off his line; the retake was buried. Croatia hit back through Martin Baturina’s curling long-range strike (36′), only for Kane to restore England’s lead with a powerful Declan Rice corner header in the 42nd minute — his 10th FIFA World Cup goal, equalling Gary Lineker’s England record. Kane also became only the second player to score for England at three different World Cups, following David Beckham.
Croatia levelled through Petar Musa moments before half-time — Ivan Perišić heading a cross down into his path to stroke home at 2–2. It did not last. Bellingham drove down the right and slotted low into the corner within 2 minutes of the second half. Rashford, a substitute, curled in a Bukayo Saka-assisted finish in the 85th minute to make it four. England top Group L. Croatia are in trouble.
Ghana 1–0 Panama | Group L
Panama had 55% possession. They outshot Ghana 11 to 8. They had four attempts on target to Ghana’s two. And they lost. Caleb Yirenkyi’s tap-in in the 95th minute — Ghana’s latest ever FIFA World Cup goal, surpassing Asamoah Gyan’s famous strike at South Africa 2010 — turned a match that had nothing to show for it into a three-point triumph for the Black Stars.
Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi was forced off at halftime with a groin injury, replaced by Benjamin Asare. Panama’s Cristian Martínez had the best chance of the second half, pulling a shimmy and firing powerfully into the side netting. Substitute Brandon Thomas-Asante broke down the left in stoppage time and rolled the ball across for Yirenkyi’s simple finish. Panama has now lost all four of its FIFA World Cup games.
Uzbekistan 1–3 Colombia | Group K
The Estadio Azteca produced one of the day’s most dramatic matches. Colombia took the lead through Daniel Muñoz’s expert flicked finish (40′) — set up by a beautiful overhead ball from Luis Díaz — and appeared comfortable. Then Uzbekistan equalised with a goal that will live forever in their footballing history.
Eldor Shomurodov’s cross from the left found substitute Dostonbek Khamdamov, whose stinging volley hit the far post and rebounded into the six-yard box. Abbosbek Fayzullaev dived to head home (60′). Uzbekistan’s first-ever FIFA World Cup goal — celebrated with the joy of an entire nation watching from thousands of miles away in Central Asia.
Colombia restored their lead five minutes later when Díaz’s low drive squirmed through goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov’s gloves (65′). Substitute Jaminton Campaz powered a header to make it 3–1 in the 90th minute. Uzbekistan’s Behruzjon Karimov rattled the post in the final seconds — a cruel last reminder of how close they came to a second goal. Colombia lead Group K.
