Half-time at the Miami Stadium: England 1-1 Norway.
England had over 70% of the ball. They had the better chances for long stretches. And then, in the 36th minute, Andreas Schjelderup picked up the ball on Norway’s left wing and curled a left-footed strike into the top right corner that nobody — least of all Jordan Pickford — saw coming. Norway led. England spent the remainder of the half chasing the game. Jude Bellingham found the equaliser in the second minute of added time. It is 1-1, and the tension inside the Miami Stadium is absolute.

23rd Minute — England’s Best Moment Goes Begging
England’s patient, possession-based approach nearly paid off midway through the first half. Madueke beat his man to reach the byline and drilled a sharp cross through the six-yard box — the kind of delivery that causes panic in any defense. It eluded Norway’s central defenders and reached Nico O’Reilly at the back post. O’Reilly was caught slightly off-guard by the pace of it, and the ball rolled out for a goal kick. The chance was there.
34th-35th Minute — Norway’s Warning Signs
Norway’s first meaningful period of danger arrived in two quick moments. In the 34th minute, John Stones — usually solid and composed tried to play a short pass back. The ball was loose. Haaland almost reached it. Pickford reacted immediately, sprinting off his line to collect before Haaland could finish. A let-off, pure and simple.
A minute later, Julian Ryerson whipped in an accurate cross from the right. Haaland out jumped his marker and powered a header on target — but directed it straight into Pickford’s gloves. Norway had found their rhythm. England’s defense had been briefly rattled.
36th Minute — Schjelderup’s Thunderbolt
It came out of nothing. Andreas Schjelderup, operating on Norway’s left, picked up the ball. The obvious read was a cross — Haaland lurking at the back post, the shape of a delivery building. Instead, Schjelderup planted his left foot and launched a magnificent strike that hit the far post and went into the top far corner. It looked like a cross, but the pace suggested otherwise.
Pickford had misread it completely. England appealed loudly for a foul on Kane in the build-up — the referee waved it away. The goal stood. Norway 1-0 England, and the substitution that produced two assists against Brazil had now produced a goal of his own against England. Schjelderup is becoming this tournament’s most dangerous impact player.
44th Minute — Norway’s Glorious Missed Opportunity
Norway almost made it 2-0 in the 44th minute, and the miss will haunt them. A lightning counter-attack left Stones isolated in a 2-on-1. Martin Odegaard slid a perfectly timed ball to release Sorloth on the right, with Haaland — Haaland — running free to the left of him. An open goal beckoned if the pass was made. Sorloth hesitated. He delayed, shaped to shoot, delayed again. O’Reilly tracked back desperately and made a monumental block.
If Sorloth squares it to Haaland, Norway are 2-0 up with a minute of the half remaining. Instead: 1-0. A chance that will be replayed many times in the second half.
45+2 Minute — Bellingham Saves England
England were not done. Deep into two minutes of added time, they broke quickly out of a Norwegian attack. Anthony Gordon found space on the flank and delivered a precise pass to Jude Bellingham arriving late into the box. Bellingham received it, went two more steps, adjusted his body and drove a clean, low left-footed shot into the bottom right corner. 1-1. The whistle blew almost immediately after.
Bellingham’s ninth contribution at this tournament — in the biggest moment of the half, he delivered. Again.
The Half-Time Picture
45 minutes remain. Norway need to hold England’s possession and score on the counter. England need to stop Schjelderup, manage Haaland, and find the quality they have been building towards all half. The quarter-final is perfectly poised.
