FIFA World Cup 2026

It finished goalless. The scoreline says Ecuador and Curaçao shared the points. What it cannot capture is everything Eloy Room did to make that happen. The Curaçao goalkeeper produced one of the most extraordinary individual displays in recent FIFA World Cup 2026™ memory at the Kansas City Stadium — save after save after save, defying an Ecuador side that dominated possession, created chance after chance, and left with nothing to show for it.

Ecuador Come Early

Curaçao barely had time to find their shape before Room was called into action. In the third minute, Enner Valencia burst straight through the middle and struck cleanly at goal. Room flung himself to his left and tipped it around the post with his fingertips. It was an early indication of what the evening would require from him.

Ecuador continued to press, with Jordy Alcívar and Valencia both testing Room in the 15-to-30-minute period. Neither could beat him. At the other end, Sherel Floranus showed that Curaçao were not simply defending — a counter-attack ended with his effort sailing over the crossbar, a reminder that this team had pace and intent on the break.

The physical intensity of the first half began to tell late on. Alcívar and Curaçao’s Leandro Bacuna were both booked in the 37th and 39th minutes following aggressive challenges — a sign of how tightly contested the midfield battle had become beneath Ecuador’s surface dominance.

The Plata Header — and Still Room Says No

The closest Ecuador came in the second half arrived in the 58th minute. Gonzalo Plata connected perfectly with a bullet header inside the box — the kind of contact that usually means a goal. Room got to it. A reflex parry, timed to perfection, and the ball was gone. The Ecuador players stood and stared. The Curaçao players didn’t quite believe it themselves.

What made Room’s performance more than just a collection of saves was his reading of the game throughout. He positioned himself correctly before shots arrived, narrowed angles instinctively, and commanded his area with a composure that seemed almost unfair given the circumstances. Ecuador tried everything — quick combinations, crosses from wide, set pieces, efforts from distance. Room had an answer each time.

Crossbar, VAR, and the Final Whistle

The match was nearly decided in unlikely fashion in the 89th minute. Substitute Ángelo Preciado advanced down the wing and mishit his cross — the ball swerved awkwardly, struck the top of the crossbar, and deflected out of play. In the 95th minute, a VAR review inside the Curaçao box gave Ecuador one last hope. The wait stretched out. The decision came back: no penalty. The referee blew the final whistle moments later. Ecuador dominated 63 per cent of possession against Curaçao’s 26 per cent, produced chance after chance, and left with a single point.

What This Result Means

Elsewhere in Group E on the same evening, Germany came from behind to beat Ivory Coast 2-1 — a result that reshapes the group picture considerably. Germany now sit top with six points from two matches. Ecuador, despite their dominance tonight, trail behind. The final group fixtures could yet be dramatic, with multiple teams fighting for the remaining knockout spots.

But the deeper concern for Ecuador is not tactical. It is a pattern. In their opening match against Ivory Coast, they were the better side for long stretches — only to concede a goal in the dying minutes and lose a game they had done enough to win. Tonight, against Curaçao, the story repeated itself in a different way: complete control of the ball, clear opportunities, and nothing on the scoreboard to show for it. Two matches. Two performances that suggested a team capable of competing at this level. Two results that suggest something is going wrong at the moment of truth.

Curaçao had one of the saves of the tournament from Eloy Room. Ivory Coast had fortune on their side. Ecuador, though, will know that these excuses only stretch so far. Goals win games. Chances must become goals. If they carry this conversion problem into their final group match, their FIFA World Cup 2026™ could end before it truly begins.
