Colombia vs Ghana
FIFA World Cup 2026

Colombia lead Ghana 1–0 at halftime in their FIFA World Cup 2026™ Round of 32 match. Jhon Arias scored in the 13th minute after a frantic opening quarter that saw both teams forced into early substitutions. Colombia have been the dominant side — in terms of possession and the score — but Ghana have shown enough to suggest the second half will not be straightforward.

An Opening Quarter Full of Disruption

Ghana made the brighter start. Thomas Partey drove a long-range effort wide of the post inside the first minute — a statement of intent from a side that came into this match with something to prove. Colombia responded by pressing high, pinning Ghana back and slowing the tempo down to something that suited them. By the 3rd minute, they had seized control of possession and were keeping it.

Then came the injuries. In the 7th minute, Jhon Córdoba went down and could not continue — Luis Suárez came on as an early tactical substitute. In the 12th minute, Ghana’s Marvin Senaya went the same way, replaced by Alidu Seidu. Both teams were disrupted before the match had found its rhythm.

Arias — Booked, Then Brilliant

The Jhon Arias story of the first half deserves its own paragraph. In the 11th minute, he received a yellow card for a mistimed challenge. One minute later, Suárez — on the pitch for barely five minutes — played a precise impact assist directly into his path. Arias did not hesitate. Clinical finish. 1–0. VAR reviewed it briefly and confirmed. A booking and a goal before the first hydration break. Arias is already walking the disciplinary tightrope heading into the second half — one more foul and Colombia lose their goalscorer.

Colombia’s Control, Ghana’s Moments

After the goal, Colombia tightened their grip. Their possession figures were extraordinary — at one point 79% to Ghana’s 21%. The Black Stars were chasing shadows for long stretches, unable to string passes together or build through Colombia’s press.

They did find moments. Iñaki Williams led a counter-offensive in the 34th minute that forced a corner — Colombia’s defence cleared their lines. In the 39th minute, Luis Díaz got on the end of a bouncing ball inside the box but scuffed his half-volley wide when a second goal was there to be taken. In the 42nd minute, Jefferson Lerma’s driven cross found Suárez arriving late — his quick-reaction header sailed wide. Colombia had chances to put this away.

What the Second Half Holds

Colombia have done everything right except finish. One goal from Arias — who is now on a yellow card — is not enough to feel comfortable. Ghana need to find a way to be more threatening in possession; their one good moment from Iñaki Williams suggests the pace and directness are there.

The Arias yellow card is the subplot of the second half. If he picks up another booking, Ghana gain a numerical advantage. Colombia’s coaching staff will be very aware of that.
