Switzerland are into the FIFA World Cup 2026™ Round of 16 after a composed 2–0 victory over Algeria at BC Place in Vancouver. Breel Embolo struck in the 10th minute, Dan Ndoye doubled the lead with the first touch of the second half, and Gregor Kobel was imperious in goal whenever Algeria threatened. It was professional, efficient, and completely controlled — exactly what you would expect from a Swiss side that has quietly become one of the more reliable teams left in the tournament.
Algeria gave everything. They just could not find the net.
First Half: Embolo Strikes Early, Kobel Stands Firm
Algeria nearly opened the scoring in the 7th minute — Riyad Mahrez whipped a dangerous cross across the six-yard box, and Ibrahim Maza arrived at the far post just a fraction of a second too late. The kind of chance that, on another night, falls perfectly.
Switzerland punished the miss immediately. Three minutes later, Johan Manzambi — whose ability to carry the ball at pace has been one of this tournament’s genuine surprises — burst forward on a fast break and slipped a precise pass into Breel Embolo’s stride. Embolo finished from close range, calm as you like. 1–0.
Algeria pressed back. Gregor Kobel twice denied them in the first half. In the 14th minute, he got down sharply to push away a driven Houssem Aouar effort. In the 42nd minute, Farès Chaïbi — already on a yellow card — tested him again with a low shot to the same corner. Same result. Kobel’s positioning and reaction speed were the difference. Had either of those gone in, the complexion of the match would have been entirely different.
Manuel Akanji added another crucial intervention in the 22nd minute, throwing himself into the path of an Aouar drive to block it out for a corner. Granit Xhaka had his moment too — a trademark curling long-range effort in the 35th minute that required a spectacular diving fingertip save from Algeria’s Luca Zidane to keep the deficit at one.
Switzerland went into the interval with their lead and their shape intact.
Second Half: Ndoye Kills the Tie in 60 Seconds
The second half lasted approximately 60 seconds before Switzerland made it 2–0. Algeria twice failed to clear their lines from a dangerous ball into the box right after the restart. The loose ball broke to Dan Ndoye on the edge of the area. He did not hesitate — a clinical low finish past Zidane before Algeria had drawn breath. 2–0. Game, in all but name, over.
Algeria kept on trying. But a goal never materialised. Switzerland’s defensive shape, with Akanji marshalling the backline, gave Algeria nothing clean to aim at.
Embolo came close to a brace in the 78th minute, rising to meet a corner and rattling the crossbar with a powerful header. The rebound fell away. Kobel made one more significant contribution in the 84th minute, punching a dipping Mahrez free-kick safely over the bar when anything less precise could have caused problems. Zeki Amdouni, another Swiss substitute, drove a low shot in the 88th minute that Zidane got down well to stop — but by then the result was long settled.
What Switzerland Did Well
Their counter-attacking structure was the foundation of everything. Both goals came from exactly the same template — quick ball over the defensive line, runner arriving at pace, finish before the keeper could set. Manzambi’s assist for the first goal and the chaos that led to the second were both rooted in Switzerland’s ability to transition from defence to attack in two or three passes.
Kobel’s evening deserves its own mention. Algeria were not toothless — they were simply met by a goalkeeper in excellent form every time they had a chance.

Switzerland now faces the winner of Colombia vs Ghana in the Round of 16. They are not a flashy team. They do not play the kind of football that fills highlight reels. But they are organised, clinical, and led by a goalkeeper who is currently one of the best in this tournament. That combination is dangerous.
