Round of 32 | Dallas Stadium | Monday, 30 June – 10:30 PM IST
Match Overview
Norway arrive as the more celebrated side, built around the tournament’s most dangerous striker. Ivory Coast arrive as the more stubborn — three group games of defensive composure and a winger who scores when it matters. These two have never met at a World Cup, and what they bring to this match couldn’t be more different.
Ivory Coast navigated Group E without overwhelming anyone: Amad Diallo’s 90th-minute curler beat Ecuador, Germany won after Kessié put the Elephants ahead and Undav’s late brace turned it, then a controlled win over Curaçao confirmed second place. Norway had far less trouble in Group I — Iraq dismantled 4–1, Senegal beaten, France only ending the run in the group finale. Solbakken’s side know their best is still to come.

Team Analysis
Emerse Faé’s 4–3–3 is built for patience and defensive organisation. Ibrahim Sangaré holds in front of Ousmane Diomandé and Evan Ndicka at centre-back. Seko Fofana drives from deep; Franck Kessié — captain, past his 100th cap — covers the ground and breaks late into the box. Wilfried Singo adds width from right-back. This squad doesn’t panic, and tournament football rewards exactly that.
Key Player: Amad Diallo — Two goals in three games, both decisive. The Manchester United winger curled home the 90th-minute winner against Ecuador off the bench, then opened the scoring against Curaçao. His acceleration and composure in one-on-one situations are Ivory Coast’s sharpest weapon. Julian Ryerson’s habit of pushing forward from right-back creates precisely the channel Amad wants.
Ståle Solbakken’s 4–3–3 presses high and moves the ball quickly into channels for Haaland. Martin Ødegaard is the engine room — he draws defenders, plays passes others don’t see, and creates half-seconds of space for everyone around him. Sander Berge and Fredrik Aursnes give him the protection to operate freely. Antonio Nusa and Oscar Bobb provide direct options wide. The structure is disciplined. When it works, it’s near-unstoppable.
Key Player: Erling Haaland — Four goals in Norway’s first two group games. At 25 and at the peak of his powers at Manchester City, his movement — the run in behind, the sudden drop, the change of direction — makes him nearly impossible to contain with a single plan. Ivory Coast’s centre-backs will face the most demanding 90 minutes of their World Cup.
Head-to-Head Record
Norway and Ivory Coast have never met at a World Cup. Norway’s last appearance — France 1998, ending in a Round of 16 defeat to Italy — came before Ivory Coast’s World Cup era began in Germany 2006. Their record in friendlies is limited and carries no relevant weight. Monday night in Dallas is a blank page. Only the past three weeks matter.
Tactical Preview
Faé will set up compact and invite Norway to have the ball. Sangaré and Kessié sit in a block to deny Haaland space inside the area, while the backline holds its shape. Ivory Coast will give up possession deliberately and wait for the moment to break. Amad running at a high defensive line is the plan. It’s worked in both group stage wins.
Norway will look to unsettle that shape with Nusa and Bobb wide, creating second balls for Ødegaard centrally. The opening 20 minutes will be decisive. Against Iraq, Norway won the ball high and tore the game apart before half-time. If Ivory Coast get through those exchanges with their shape intact, this becomes a different match entirely.
Key Storylines
- Norway’s 28-year wait: Norway haven’t been at a World Cup since France 1998, when Ole Gunnar Solskjær and Tore André Flo helped them reach the Round of 16. Haaland was born that year. He’s spent his entire career scoring at a rate no one in history matches, without a World Cup stage. Monday changes that.
- Kessié vs Ødegaard: Two of the most complete midfielders at this tournament meet in the centre of the pitch. Kessié is the engine — physical, relentless, covers every blade of grass. Ødegaard is the craftsman — precise, a step ahead of everyone, sets the tempo from deep. Who controls this zone in the opening half-hour will likely decide the match.
Prediction and Verdict
Norway is probably the stronger squad, and Haaland will get chances — that’s near-certain against any defence. But Ivory Coast have shown they can frustrate and punish, and Faé’s organisation makes them uncomfortable opponents for a team that needs tempo and space. If the Elephants hold their shape for 70 minutes, this is open.
Two proper chances for Haaland in a knockout game, though, is probably one too many. If Norway cannot find a lead in the early minutes, this game could well be settled in the tie-breakers.
