Six matches. Six different stories. The FIFA World Cup 2026™ group stage kept its most emotional moments for the final hours — two squandered penalties, a VAR goal overturned in the 93rd minute, and a small island nation from the Atlantic making history by reaching the knockout rounds for the first time ever. June 27 delivered everything.
Two penalties went begging on the day. Alexander Larsen stepped up for Norway against France and missed. Mehdi Taremi took Iran’s spot-kick against Egypt and was denied by a brilliant Mostafa Shobeir save.

Cabo Verde: The Story of the Day
Before this World Cup, Cabo Verde had never played a single FIFA World Cup 2026™ group stage match. An archipelago of ten islands off the west coast of Africa, a footballing nation that had punched above its weight in African qualifiers for years but never quite broken through. On June 27, that changed.
A 0-0 draw with Saudi Arabia at Houston Stadium was enough. Cabo Verde held their nerve, goalkeeper Vozinha made saves when it mattered, and the final whistle confirmed it: they are through to the Round of 32 as group runners-up. Their reward — a date with Argentina in Miami on July 3. The entire archipelago will have been watching.
Through to the Round of 32
France and Norway both advance from their group — Norway had already secured their place in earlier rounds and rested ten starters against France, with a Round of 32 tie against Côte d’Ivoire already lined up. France, meanwhile, produced the day’s most complete performance to finish as group winners.
Spain topped their group after winning two matches. Cape Verde joins them from second place. Belgium finished as Group G winners — a dominant 5-1 result against New Zealand confirmed it in style. Egypt holds second place in Group G following a gripping 1-1 draw with Iran.

Still Waiting: The Best Third-Place Race
In this 48-team World Cup, eight of the twelve third-placed teams advance. That means a handful of teams must wait and watch as results play out across other groups before they know their fate.
Senegal and Iraq played their final group match simultaneously, and the result could not have been more decisive. Senegal’s 5-0 win moves them up to third place. They are a strong contender to qualify as the third-placed team. They have 3 points and have a positive goal difference of 2. This is all because of their strong result against Iraq.
Iran also sits on three points with a goal difference of zero after their 1-1 draw. They had a penalty saved, a goal ruled out by VAR in the 93rd minute, and hit the woodwork twice. Three points and a zero goal difference is a difficult hand to play in the third-place standings — their fate depends entirely on other groups.
Uruguay lost to Spain and had Canobbio dismissed late — their chances of making the best third-place cut are slim but mathematically alive pending other group outcomes. New Zealand, Saudi Arabia and Iraq are eliminated.
