Match overview

Switzerland don’t tend to arrive with fanfare. They just show up, grind through qualifying unbeaten, knock out the tournament holders at a European Championship, and reach another World Cup quarterfinal. Murat Yakin’s team have made consistency an art form. Qatar, by contrast, are still working through the aftermath of 2022 — when they were eliminated in the group stage of the World Cup without a win. Julen Lopetegui’s appointment brought European credibility, but two wins from eleven pre-tournament games leave serious questions about how ready this side actually is.

Team analysis

Qatar

Back-to-back AFC Asian Cup wins in 2019 and 2023 showed genuine regional development. But the 2022 World Cup cut through all of that: three losses and only one goal. Lopetegui arrived in 2025 with strong credentials — trophies at Sevilla, Champions League experience with Real Madrid — and has imposed a 4-2-3-1 built around controlled possession and a double pivot in midfield. Six players with over 100 caps give him experience to work with. The results haven’t followed yet.

Key player: Akram Afif — Fifteen goals and twelve assists in the Qatar Stars League this season, 11 assists in Asian qualifying. The Al-Sadd winger is the one player in this squad capable of deciding a game on his own. Dangerous cutting inside from the left, sharp in tight spaces, and as direct as anyone at this FIFA World Cup 2026™.

Switzerland

Unbeaten through European qualifying. Euro 2024 quarterfinalists — after knocking out Italy. Yakin has built a team that knows exactly what it is: defensively disciplined, capable of quick transitions, and with enough individual quality to hurt anyone on a good day. Gregor Kobel is coming off a strong Dortmund campaign and is one of the more accomplished goalkeepers in this draw. Manuel Akanji brings composure and pace at centre-back — his time at Manchester City and Inter Milan shows in every game. Breel Embolo is fit, in form, and leading the attack.

Key player: Granit Xhaka — Captain, record appearance holder, and the axis around which Switzerland’s system rotates. At 33 and at his fourth consecutive World Cup, Xhaka controls tempo, triggers the press, and dictates how much of the ball Yakin’s side sees. When he’s on, Switzerland are a genuinely hard side to beat.

Head-to-head record

Only one prior meeting — a friendly in November 2018 that Qatar won 1-0, Akram Afif heading home two minutes from time. Sunday’s Group B contest is their first competitive fixture. There’s not much to read into a single warm-up game, but Qatar fans won’t have forgotten it.

Tactical preview

Lopetegui sets up in a 4-2-3-1: build from the back, double pivot screening the defence, Afif given freedom from the left. Switzerland sit compact in a mid-block and look to transition quickly through Dan Ndoye and Breel Embolo when the ball is won. The contest in central midfield is the key: if Xhaka and his partner disrupt Qatar’s combinations early, Afif gets isolated, and Qatar’s patterns break down. Qatar need to play through the press — something they’ve struggled to do consistently under Lopetegui.

Key storylines

  • Granit Xhaka and Ricardo Rodriguez are both appearing at a fourth consecutive senior World Cup, having also played together in the Switzerland side that won the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup as teenagers. It’s an extraordinary run of longevity for two players at the top of international football.
  • Qatar’s 2022 group stage exit — as the host nation to leave without a win — remains the context that defines them going into this tournament. Lopetegui has tried to reshape the narrative, but that history doesn’t disappear simply because there’s new management in charge.
  • Breel Embolo has battled persistent injuries throughout much of his career. The version heading into this tournament — fit, sharp, and the team’s leading scorer in qualifying — is the best Switzerland fans have seen in years. For Qatar’s defenders, that’s a concern.

Prediction and verdict

Switzerland are better organised and in considerably stronger form. Qatar have Afif — and he can turn any game — but one player against Switzerland’s disciplined back line rarely proves enough. Yakin’s side control games without dominating them, and that should be enough here. Switzerland should win this

2-0.
