Will India Make Marijuana Legal Again?
Rhea’s arrests once again has weed advocates calling for legalization.
Before 1984, marijuana aka weed was completely legal in India. Ours is also a country that mentions it in ancient epics and holy texts. Bhaang, a derivative of weed, is consumed openly during the festival of Holi, despite its illegality. Several temples across the country offer weed as prasad to devotees. In a country like this, an actor getting arrested by Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) over just a few grams of marijuana has gotten activists advocating the legalization of weed riled up again.
There has recently been a wave of legalization of marijuana in a number of countries across the world. Many states of the US have legalized recreational use of the plant, while nations like Canada, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Australia, Barbados, Bermuda and more have legalized it for medicinal purposes. And while most other countries have still banned the recreational use of marijuana, they have at least decriminalized it, thus decreasing the severity of the punishment.
