Former President of India, Pranab Mukherjee lost his life yesterday after battling multiple illnesses for the past few weeks. Tributes poured in from all corners of India and people from all walks of life. Bharat Ratna Pranab Mukherjee was respected across party lines for his true statesmanship. An old video from the year 2000, shows us how the senior politician stoically faced difficult questions poised by the anchor of a news channel. When asked about ‘the Emergency’ imposed by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975, he was quick to answer the question.
Dr Mukherjee said, “Emergency is an extraordinary situation and naturally its impact will be extraordinary. It is not a normal situation. Whenever there is an Emergency situation, there are certain impacts on the fundamental rights, the functioning of the judiciary, and on the functioning of other various organizations. Therefore, it is not correct to compare an ordinary situation with an extraordinary situation.”
