The gang-rape and murder of a 19-year-old Dalit girl from Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras district is the centre of national attention now. After the family of the victim alleged that they were forcibly locked up in their own home while the police cremated the girl’s body themselves, UP Minister Bhupendra Chaudhary has completely denied this account. The four men have been arrested and UP Chief Minsiter Yogi Adityanath has formed a Special Investigative Team (SIT) to investigate the case and a fast-track court to hear it.

Bhupendra Chaudhary, who was visiting the victim’s family in Hathras said, “The victim’s family have themselves performed the cremation according to customs. And as far as your question (of the family’s allegations) is concerned, the Government has already constituted an SIT in the Chairmanship of the Home Secretary. They will provide a report in a week’s time and the rest of the procedures will be done based on that.” He later added, “The dead body was indeed brought home, as far as I am told, and the cremation happened according to customs.”
