Saroj Khan: The Legendary Queen Of Thumkas Bids Adieu To The World

From ‘Dola Re Dola’ to ‘Masakalli’ the award-winning choreographer, Saroj Khan gave Bollywood some of the best dance moves.

2020 has been a year of great loss for the entertainment industry, while the industry was just coming to terms with the loss of actors like Irrfan Khan, Rishi Kapoor and Sushant Singh Rajput, they have been hit by yet another great loss. The legendary choreographer who gave Bollywood it’s famous thumkas has bid adieu to the world. Saroj Khan had serious breathing issues when she was admitted to the Guru Nanak hospital at Bandra. The revered dancer was suffering from chronic diabetes and had tested negative for COVID. Saroj Khan was admitted to the hospital on the 17 June 2020. She finally lost the battle and succumbed to a cardiac arrest in the wee hours of 3 July 2020.

She has blessed Bollywood and given some of the most famous hook steps from Dola Re Dola (Devdas) to Ye Ishq Haaye (Jab We Met). Her choreography has won accolades and awards ranging from the National Award (Jab We Met) to Filmfare and cine awards (Devdas, Lagaan, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam).

Saroj Khan’s demise has come as a bolt out of the blue for her favourite actress and shishya, Madhuri Dixit. The latter is finding it hard to believe that the beloved ‘Masterji’ of Bollywood is no more.

Other Bollywood actors including Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, and choreographers of Bollywood like Ahmed Khan and Shiamak Davar also shared their grief.

Saroj Khan was one of the most sought after choreographers. She made dance seem like a breeze with her unique moves and she put the actors to ease, that showed on camera when they danced to the rhythm of the songs. from ‘Masakalli’ Sonam Kapoor to ‘Ghani Bawari Ho Gayi’ Kangana Ranaut, Saroj Khan has given us immemorable dance videos.

Saroj Khan had a way of getting through the actors and making the graceful steps look ‘Oh-so-easy’ on the screen. Aishwarya Rai’s Taal is a solid example of this.

The latest addition to the Queen of choreography’s list was the film Manikarnika starring Bollywood’s Rani, Kangana Ranaut. The Indian film industry has lost one of its most beloved and talented choreographers.
