Rail Roko Agitation In Amritsar Reaches Sixth Day
Protests by farmers against new farm bills continue in various parts of India.
Protests against the farm bills passed in Parliament have been going on since quite some time now, and one such show of opposition to the bill has been the Rail Roko agitation organized in Amritsar by the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee. This agitation entered its sixth day today, as farmers sat on rail tracks blocking the passing of trains. “On Oct 1, we’ll announce mass agitation together with others across the nation,” said Sarwan Singh Pandher, State General Secretary, Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee.
The farm bills have seen heavy opposition in the states of Punjab and Haryana, among others. The Shiromani Akali Dal, one of the BJP’s oldest allies withdrew support to the BJP-led Indian Government recently over disagreements on the farm bills. The bills are aimed at bringing intra-state and inter-state trade of farmers’ produce beyond the physical premises of Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) markets and other markets notified under the state APMC Acts. Protests have been on in Punjab and Haryana since even before the farm bills were introduced in the Parliament. However, they were passed in both Houses amidst heavy protests by Opposition parties.
