A Pakistan court has issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against former PM Nawaz Sharif for failing to appear before it during the hearing of his appeal against conviction in a corruption case. Sharif, 70, is currently in London undergoing medical treatment. He has been there since November last year after the Lahore High Court granted him permission to go abroad for four weeks for treatment. He has already been convicted in two separate corruption cases but has managed to bail himself out in both.

The three-time Prime Minister of Pakistan was convicted in the Avenfield properties case in July 2018, along with his daughter Maryam and son-in-law Muhammad Safdar. In December of the same year, Sharif was also sentenced to seven years in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills case. Sharif’s lawyer, Khawaja Haris Ahmed had filed a review petition in the Islamabad High Court stating that his health condition would not allow him to return home from London and surrender in a corruption case.
