More than 4,000 sanitation workers from the Patna Municipal Corporation went on strike today to demand better wages. The striking union has also demanded standardized jobs for daily wage workers, appropriate income for certain jobs, accidental insurance of Rs 25 lakh and the arrival of salary and pension on the 5th of every month. The strike comes at a time when the city of Patna is witnessing a rise in COVID-19 cases and the absence of sanitation workers could lead to huge challenges for the citizens as well as the Municipal Corporation.

This is not the first instance in recent times that sanitation workers from Patna have gone on a strike. The same had happened last September as well when hundreds of them had gone on an indefinite strike asking for pending salaries from the previous months. In February this year, their strike had lasted multiple days, even as garbage and animal carcasses laid rotting in most parts of the city as there was no one to clean them.
