The Nepal Communist Party (NCP) is all set to have a critical meeting today that could decide the fate of the country’s Prime Minister, KP Sharma Oli. The Standing Committee of the ruling party is expected to discuss power-sharing issues, even as differences between the Prime Minister and the faction led by senior leaders, Pushpa Kamal Dahal (aka Prachanda) and Madhav Kumar Nepal refuse to die down. The meet was postponed by two hours as Oli and Prachanda were engaged in an informal discussion.

Before this, the meeting between the senior leaders of the NCP has been delayed over seven times since June 24 and comes right on the heels of news about a China-brokered deal between Oli and Prachanda. Another bone of contention in the party is regarding the holding of an early General Convention. Earlier reports had indicated that the two leaders had agreed to hold the general convention by year-end, with Oli backing Prachanda for the post of party chairman in exchange for the former Prime Minister dropping his demands for Oli’s resignation.
