In an embarrassing development for the Congress party, the 11 August Bangalore riots chargesheet has been filed against Karnataka Legislative Assembly member and Congress leader Akhand Srinivas Murthy’s associates from his own party.

According to the Central Crime Branch, the entire episode was a premeditated proposition to target Murthy and create hatred for him within the city. One of the persons named in the police report is Congress member and ex-Mayor of Bengaluru, Sampath Raj. He is also the corporator of the DJ Halli constituency, that was one of the main areas where the protests took place. Pulakeshinagar Congress corporator Abdul Rakeeb Zakir is the other person responsible for the unrest in August.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA), which is also probing this case questioned Congress MLAs Rizwan Arshad and Zameer Ahmed who were reportedly present at the demonstrations.

According to sources, investigating agencies have revealed that Murthy’s nephew Naveen’s social media post was used as a bait to ignite and instigate communal violence. This was allegedly planned by the suspected Congress members more than three months in advance. The violent protests took place outside Akhand Srinivas’s residence and the DJ Halli police station, leaving three people dead and more than 50 people injured in the police crossfire.

Karnataka former chief minister, HD Kumaraswamy has blamed the Congress for this incident, calling the party responsible for making Bengaluru an unsafe place for its citizens.
