Namaste has gone viral yet again, with French President Emmanuel Macron having greeted German Chancellor Angela Merkel with the Indian greeting to avoid shaking hands, which is the usual protocol. A growing number of influential people are adopting this method of exchanging pleasantries amidst the COVID-19 crisis that has gripped the world. Social distancing is the buzz word right now and the two European leaders were seen practising it when they met on Thursday to discuss travel restrictions related to the coronavirus.

This is not the first time that Emmanuel Macron adopted the ‘namaste’ greeting though. He had done the same while meeting Spain’s King Felipe and Queen Letizia at the Elysee Palace in Paris in early March. Recently, US President Donald Trump and Prince Charles had also opted for the Indian greeting over a handshake. “I just got back from India. And I did not shake any hands there, and it was very easy because they go like this and Japan goes like this,” Trump had said while he demonstrated the Indian namaste and the Japanese ojigi.
