A shocking case of moral policing has come forward from Bihar’s Motihari, where a mob of villagers beat up a young boy because he talked to a girl from the village on a phone call. The villagers, after apparently catching him talking to a girl from the village, tied up the victim to a pole and hit him with sticks. The viral video shows at least 3 people beating up the youth with large sticks, even as some villagers try to stop them.

Bihar’s neighbour, Uttar Pradesh is famous for its anti-Romeo squads that are formed by political and non-political outfits for discouraging young couples from mingling together. In fact, one of UP Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath’s poll promises was to create such anti-Romeo squads. While that promise hasn’t been fulfilled by him, organisations like the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP)  and Bajrang Dal are often at work doing their own moral policing and beating up youths for hanging out at public places, especially during Valentine’s Day.
