Watch the trailer of this soulful love story here:

Do you believe in falling love with a total stranger on a train? Well, Yousuf Waji Ahmed (Imran Abbas), certainly does. He locks eyes with Zulaikha Noor Mohammad while travelling to Karachi to visit a friend. It is love at first sight when he cannot look away from her flawlessly beautiful face. On the other hand, Zulaikha (Maya Ali) deems it as a momentary attraction and steals glimpses away from Yousuf. Their chemistry is hindered by her father, Noor Mohammed (Waseem Abbas) who is extremely possessive of his wife and daughters.

The plot thickens in the face of Zulaikha’s father when he plans to marry off Zulaikha to Imran Mugeez (Noor’s nephew), so that he himself can marry Imran’s aunt, Bushra. What does one do when one’s own parents are engaged in a game of one-upmanship, placing one’s freedom and right to choose in jeopardy? You will find yourself rooting for Zulaikha when both of her parents try to get their way, without much thought to their sacrificial lamb of a daughter. Meanwhile, dreamer Yousuf is still hopelessly in love with her.

Yousuf and Zulaikha in Mera Naam Yousuf Hai

Through Yousuf’s character, you will vicariously live the fun of breaking rules and throwing caution to the wind. Shed a few tears if you miss more Romeos in the world, who can bravely wear their heart on their sleeve. In the scene where Noor mistakes Yousuf, for eve-teasing Zulaikha, and calls his men to beat him up, you will realise that maybe they aren’t wrong when they say everything is fair in love and war. Yousuf’s friend’s sister, Madiha (Mansha Pasha), brings a breath of fresh air but soon becomes stale breeze while having the hots for him.

Khalil-Ur-Rehman’s writing sparkles with wit and clearly justifies a dialogue in the series “Unke kamaan pe bohot se teer hai!”, meaning, “He has many arrows on his bow!” The way the story and each of the characters is revealed adds something new to the plot progression and builds on each one’s back story. He even touches upon women empowerment and self-worth through the bond between Zulaikha, Afiya Begum (her mother) and Hajira (her sister). Mehreen Jabbar’s directorial eye pays attention to detail and extracts strong performances.
