The unfortunate death of a pregnant elephant in the Palakkad district of Kerala has triggered nationwide outrage about the incident. According to an official statement, the pregnant elephant is said to have chewed on an explosive-stuffed pineapple, set to ward-off wild-boars that destroy crops. Despite best efforts of the locals and forest department, the injured elephant died on May 27, 2020. Apart from the Malayalam film stars, popular celebrities in Bollywood also shared their grief on hearing the news.

Feeling ashamed to be called a human today!!

FACT CHECK #Repost @officialhumansofkeralam ・・・ "The tragic incident that took place in Kerala very recently had caught our immediate attention. It has been both painful to digest and at the same time compelling to not overlook. The heart-wrenching photograph of a fifteen-year-old pregnant elephant standing dead in a water body has caused all of us to revisit the oppression that has been inflicted on all other beings since the dawn of humankind. This one image has so easily caused all of us to reflect. However, it is depressing that it took the death of a mother and its unborn child (foetus) to get us there! What has happened to this mother and its foetus is unforgivable, but it is also important to visit facts before we blatantly blame ‘one single community’ for this tragic incident. Police investigations have made recent developments that suggest that what has happened was not due to any deliberate action to kill the elephant. It has also come to light that it is local practice in these regions to use pineapples filled with crackers to ward off wild-boars (but are never meant to be eaten). However, it is now believed that the elephant may have accidentally consumed one of them which led to its death. Kindly do not misinterpret this message as a justification for what has happened (any attempt at doing so by anyone would be a failure as it is an act of ignorance towards the injustice caused), rather it is only to highlight the fact that the history of oppression and inhumane treatment of other beings is not only the fault of a particular group/community, but it is a fault committed and yet to be realized and corrected by humankind, as a whole." – HOK . . . #kerala #keralaelephant
