Makar Sankranti is a festival dedicated to the Sun God Surya. It is celebrated to signify the end of the winter solstice, which suggests longer days and shorter nights. This festival is celebrated in different names and different ways across India as well as the subcontinent. Surya has a special place in Hindu Mythology. AndTV has a strong line-up of TV shows based on Hindu beliefs including, Paramavtar Shri Krishna and the newly launched Kahat Hanuman Jai Shri Ram.

Watch the first episode of Kahat Hanuman Jai Shri Ram here.

One of the most popular stories about the Sun God is that Hanuman tried to eat the entire sun. As a kid, Hanuman was known to be mischievous and always up to something. The story says that Hanuman was once hungry and thought the sun was a tasty fruit. Vayudev, who brought Hanuman to earth, lifted Hanuman to fly to the sun. Surya panicked after seeing the little kid flying towards him without any fear.

Indra, on the TV show, thinks that Hanuman is his enemy. In the story, Indra tries to stop Hanuman with his elephant, Airavata, but he is brushed aside. In the end, Indra attacked Hanuman with his most powerful weapon ‘the thunderbolt’ to stop him from touching the sun. Surya and Indra were so impressed by Hanuman’s bravery that it is said that they gave him the boon of extraordinary strength and wisdom.

Watch out for more such childhood stories about Hanuman, played by the child actor Ekagra Dwiwedi, in the new show Kahar Hanuman Jai Shri Ram. Catch it every Monday to Friday at 9:30 pm on AndTV, or watch it anytime on ZEE5.
