Maharashtra Day: Revisit The History Of The State With ZEE5 Original Series Hutatma
In the city of Mumbai, near the famous Flora Fountain, hundreds of protestors were martyred on November 21, 1955. The place has been christened Hutatma Chowk in the honor of the men who lost their lives. The protestors had been asking for a separate linguistic state for the Marathi speaking citizens of India. Post-independence, India found herself amidst chaos due to India-Pakistan separation, failing economy, and more.

Bharatiya Janata Party’s (ruling party at the time) promise of delivering separate linguistic states was far from getting implemented. This enraged the citizens and the Samyukta Rashtriya Committee (SRC) was formed. After defeating the ruling party in the elections, the committee succeeded in forming a separate state of Maharashtra as well as Gujarat. On May 1, 1960, Maharashtra was declared as an independent state and since then, the 1st of May is celebrated as Maharashtra Day.
