Aside from reality shows, romance and family dramas, horror shows have also been popular in the television space. Zee Marathi’s Ratris Khel Chale is a an example, which has returned with a season 2, after a successful stint with its first once. Starring actors such as Apurva Nemlekar, Madhav Abhyankar, Suhas Sirsat, among others, the series continues its saga of telling horror stories from a haunted village in Konkan.

Though the show is fictional in nature, many of you may not be aware of the fact that Konkan is known to be a land of ghosts and spirits. Most people in Konkan believe in these spirits, who just like humans, hail from different caste groups and religions. Some of these are even considered as deities and worshiped as demigods. Have a look at these 15 different forms of spirits and ghosts that the people of Konkan have faith in:
Vetaal is considered to be the king of spirits and is called upon by priests, in cases of possession. Vetaal supposedly enters the priests body to drive out the spirit from the body of a possessed person.
A person who is dies without his/ her wishes being fulfilled, can turn into a Samandha. This is a spirit that is believed to create obstacles in a person’s life such as lack of prosperity in career, issues in education, delay in marriage etc.
3. Brahma Rakshas
A Brahmin who becomes too arrogant with his/ her knowledge and doesn’t fill the duty of imparting knowledge, becomes a Brahma Rakshas post death.
This spirit hails from the Kunbi caste. The people from this caste group usually work as domestic help or manual labour. They aren’t necessarily considered as spirits but more as people having knowledge of haunted places and how to control spirits.
If a person hailing from the Kshatriya (warrior) community, dies before getting married, he/ she is said to turn into a Vir.
If a man dies due to drowning, he becomes a Girha. This spirit usually resides near water bodies and calls out to people to make them enter deep waters.
This spirit belongs to the Muslim community in Konkan. It is believed that a Khavis is highly dangerous and evil. If a person dies a brutal death or is tortured, he/she turns into a Khavis. This spirit is an angry one and even kills innocent people, to seek revenge
A person who dies right after getting married, is believed to turn into a Devchar. This spirit resides in all the four corners of a village, hence the word ‘chaar (four).’ A Devchar can be made happy with an annual offering of coconut, chicken and sugar.
If a woman dies due to complications during her pregnancy or within 10 days of delivery, she turns into a Hadal.
This spirit is considered to be one of the most mischievous ones. A Chakwa pranks people that are travelling late at night by misguiding them and making them lose their way. He however eventually shows them the right way and leaves them unharmed.
