A year after talks of privatising the national transporter were abuzz, the Ministry of Railways has taken the first step towards privatisation by inviting Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to private players for the operation of passenger train services. At least 151 modern trains or rakes will be introduced and 109 pairs of routes will be planned out for private train operations. Each train will have a minimum of 16 coaches, said the Indian Railways in a press statement on Wednesday (July 1). The project will bring in investment from the private sector of about Rs 30,000 crore.

The private trains will be of high-speed, designed for a maximum speed of 160 km/h. There would be a substantial reduction in journey time as well. The running time taken by a train shall be as good as the fastest trains of Indian Railways. Currently, Rajdhani, Vande Bharat and Tejas are considered as high-speed trains. As per the government’s own estimate, the Indian Railways requires a fund of Rs 50 lakh crore for the next 12 years of its operation.
