I Am A Little Like Debdeep’s Character, Says Actor Indrajit Chakraborty
In the latest Bengali TV serial Nakshi Kantha, the character of Debdeep, played by popular actor Indrajit Chakraborty, is getting increasingly important. An NRI doctor who rescued Shabnam (played by Manali Dey) and is now married to her after Jash (played by Suman Dey) got married to Rohini, Debdeep is now Shabnam’s true partner in every sense. We caught up with Indrajit for a chat in between the Nakshi Kantha shoot. Here are the edited excerpts. Read on as you watch the latest episode below.
Q. Right now you are the hot favourite among Nakshi Kantha fans. Everyone loves Debdeep.
A. Thank you. I am lucky. I am thankful to Leenadi (the writer of Nakshi Kantha Leena Gangopadhyay) for giving me such a nice character.
Q. Tell us about Debdeep. What do you like the most about Debdeep’s character?
A. His positive attitude. He is open-minded and very receptive. Debdeep is very clear about what he thinks, what he wants and what he does. That is a very strong point, especially for a man. When he sees so much happening around him, he can hold himself. He can adjust to every situation and can take care of the situation in the right way if complications arise. That is a very nice thing about the character. The way it has been etched out is good. I am happy everyone is accepting the character well. Thanks to Zee Bangla for considering me for this role. After Dip Jele Jai, this is my next project with Zee. It’s my lucky charm.
Q. Do you relate to Debdeep’s character?
A. I kind of do. I am a little like this. I am very clear in my thoughts, what I speak and think.
Q. What is it like to be on the Nakshi Kantha sets?
A. It’s lovely. It’s a roller-coaster. Every day we have Ludo tournaments, TikTok videos, cricket matches, badminton, laughter and all sorts of things. We get along really well and that’s wonderful. I dread the day Nakshi Kantha ends, it will be really painful.
Q. How did you land the role?
A. I was taking a conscious break from TV for a year. I wanted to get back with something good and worthwhile. I was with Leenadi for a different reason. Suddenly something hit and she was like ‘why not you?’ I didn’t want to start a serial from the middle. I was a little sceptical and wanted to do something in which I would be there right from the beginning. But somehow I said yes. Initially it was for two months and then it got extended. I also started enjoying playing the character. I couldn’t say no to Leenadi.
Q. You play an NRI doctor. How did you prepare for the role?
A. Debdeep is an NRI doctor, well established. But you can’t use too much or accented English. So I use some mannerisms in between and throw in some lines or words with accents. I do it my way.
Q. You look like someone who works out on a regular basis. Do you find time now?
A. If I work out for three days a week I am happy. Four days I am happier and five days I am happiest. But most of the times I am happy. I try and manage at least three days a week. This is a part of my daily routine. If I don’t work out, I don’t feel good.
Q. Do you carry a portable gym to the sets?
A. I am very lazy that way (laughs). I control my diet, that’s more important.
Q. Suman is someone who works out regularly. Do you share tips?
A. Oh yes, regularly. We keep sharing our workout details everyday with each other.
Q. What are your future plans?
A. As of now nothing, because in TV you can only do one show at a time. After Nakshi Kantha is over, I will see what comes my way. I also have my own production house and we released a movie last year. I am working on the pre-production of the next.
