“Will you spend the rest of your childhood with me?” Shiva, a freshly divorced, cheesy, extra loving and caring mother, asks her teenage daughter Jahaan aka Jaanu. Yudishtir aka Yudi, on the other hand, opines, “Baccho ke side effects: life ki kisi bhi situation ko complicate kar dete hain.” Hum Tum And Them is centered around two single parents Shiva and Yudi who get a second chance at love. Shweta Tiwari and Akshay Oberoi play the aforementioned characters, who struggle to strike a balance between their past and present. Shiva and Yudi’s children find it hard to keep up with their parents’ new lives, while the elders face problems in maintaining relationships.

The story begins with a distraught Shiva being ditched by her daughter at the airport for a Kasauli trip that they were to take together. A heartbroken Shiva takes to the bottle and spends her first evening at the hill station crying and begging Jahaan over voice notes and messages to come down. Soon, Shiva finds Yudi in her hotel room, in her bed to be precise. A flamboyant and handsome man that he is, he wastes not a second more and starts flirting with Shiva. Yudi too has drowned himself in alcohol after learning that his three kids Aaryan, Ojhas and Vyoma shall stay with him for three months. After losing his wife to cancer, freedom is the only thing that matters to Yudi. But he finds himself getting drawn to Shiva. They fall in love, eventually. But how their personal inhibitions as well as the children’s disapproval keep them from truly coming together forms the rest of the narrative. Will Shiva and Yudi’s love story reach its final destination?

Directed by Sahir Raza, Hum Tum And Them is all about second chances. Shiva and Yudi don’t only get a second chance at love but at parenting too. Shiva is trying hard to erase her image of a selfish woman painted by her ex-husband Nikhil, while Yudi attempts to get to know his kids better, something that he hadn’t done ever since his better half died. With emotionally moving scenes shared between a parent and children, two lovers faced with odds and kids whose parents are trying to start a life together, Hum Tum And Them leaves you with a lump in your throat. A priceless addition to the content bucket on ZEE5, the web series is laced with feelings, lessons, love, romance, parenting guide and several moments that you and I can relate to as individuals. Having said that, melodrama takes center stage more than required. But we can sit through it with ease because aren’t we all used to Indian parents at their desi best?

Stunning performances by Aashika Bhatia. Bhavin Bhanushali, Gaurav Ahuja amongst others, who add meat to the material penned by the writers. As Yudi and Shiva’s children, the younger lot of the cast doles out stellar stints, brilliantly supporting Shweta and Akshay’s onscreen camaraderie. Although we are yet to watch all the episodes of the digital drama, the first few episodes seem promising. We must say that the casting is very well on point.

Shweta Tiwari carries with her years and years of small screen and silver screen experience. The same is reflected in her nuanced and beautifully layered performance in Hum Tum And Them as Shiva. Her character is maligned for being an independent, strong and free woman. But never does Shiva let anyone take her for a ride.,Even in moments when her daughter yells “I hate you” at her in a hotel lobby or when a stranger she met hours ago tries to label her as an “okay for a 40 something” and “This is what perfect looks like,” Shiva fights back! Shweta’s scintillating show in her debut web drama is proof that there isn’t a single role she can never own. Give her the part, sit back and watch her walk away with all the praise. That’s her acting finesse in a nutshell for you!

Akshay Oberoi can easily be classified as one of the most underrated stars in the industry. The actor who has been a part of films like Pizza and Kaalakaandi amongst many more has never been truly appreciated for the fantastic job he does. Swinging between a funny, carefree father and a lover boy falling for Shiva, Yudi makes us like him and dislike him in equal measure. Akshay’s honest and humble portrayal of a father is just as much rejuvenating as his pairing with Shweta. We cannot wait to see more of him in the coming future, as he makes us want for more with his performance in Hum Tum And Them.

The music album has been well put together, reserving meaningful lyrics that soothe you during heartbreaks and others that add to the joy of falling in love. A special mention to the writers of the show who have excellently retained the flavour while also adding a fresh tadka! The dialogues are all things emotional, romantic, fiery and gritty. The story hits you right in the feels, covering all of the insides and aspects of our daily life. It is an enchanting journey of two lost souls who find each other on the same wavelength, combine their forces to create something sublime and serene filled with love, laughter, and happily ever after!
