One of Hong Kong’s prominent media tycoons, Jimmy Lai, was recently arrested by police at his home in the city. Founder of a local newspaper Apple Daily and Next Magazine Publications, he is very popular for his outspoken nature and is often seen criticising China’s authoritarian rule. New reports state that Lai was arrested on suspicion of collusion with foreign powers, deepening a crackdown on democracy supporters under the new national security law. Along with him, the other senior executives of his media empire were also detained.

The new security law was imposed on the city, two weeks back. Lai told the reporters thatI’m prepared for prison if the time comes.” He further described the new security law as a death knell for Hong Kong as he feels that the new law will supersede or destroy the metropolitan area’s rule of law and destroy their international financial status.
