Ganesh Chaturthi, is around the corner. It is the fourth day of the month of Avani during the new moon period is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Shiva and Parvathy’s son. During this festival, devotees prepare a variety of traditional recipes like Modak and so on which are considered the favourite food of Lord Ganesha. Here are some of the tasty recipes of the same that you can prepare during the festival.
Modak is one of the most important food preparations made on Ganesh Chaturthi. It is believed to be Ganesha’s favourite. Made of rice flour, grated coconut and jaggery, all you have to do is prepare the stuffing from jaggery and coconut. In another vessel boil, add water, salt and ghee along with 1 cup fine rice flour. Mix them well and allow to rest for 5 minutes. Transfer the rice flour mixture into a large mixing bowl and knead the flour. Pinch a small ball and flatten it. With the help of your thumb, start pressing the edges and create a dent. Slowly press from edges till it forms a cup. Now scoop a spoon of coconut-jaggery stuffing and close it by adding pleats together to form a bundle. Place the modak in steamer. Cover and steam the modak for 10 minutes. Your dish is ready!
Holige is a sweet flatbread recipe that is usually made during Ganesh Chaturthi. You will have to prepare the dough and filling after which you will have to leave the dough to rest for 3 hours. Knead the dough slightly and make it a small ball sized dough. Then, flatten the same. For the stuffing, add cooked channa dal in a grinder along with one cup jaggery and ½ teaspoon cardamon powder along with ¼ teaspoon nutmeg powder. Put the stuffing in the dough. Bring the edges together and get rid of the excess dough. Dust the ball with rice flour and roll gently and roll the same in one direction making sure the holige is thin. Roast the same on a tava flame for a minute or till bubbles appear. Flip over and cook both sides pressing slightly. Your dish is ready!
