FASHION FRIDAY: Easy Tips To Get Gorgeous Curls Like Sega Star Nithya Menen
Curly hair, don’t care. How we wish all of us could say it all the time like this popular hashtag. But the frizz, the inability to try out different haircuts or styles – they all make us curly-haired girls hate our hair sometimes. But curls are beautiful. And one look at Sega star Nithya Menen and we totally believe that.
Wondering how to take lust-worthy curls like her? Find the right care product combination for your hair. Moisturising products work well on curly hair and help balance the hair’s natural moisture content, improving strength and elasticity.
Dr Vanishree Aithal, MD, Birla Ayurveda, recommends going for traditional Indian haircare based on Ayurveda for managing your curls. “Oiling is the most important ritual in traditional hair care as it brings essential nutrients through increased circulation. It exfoliates the hair follicles and soothes your scalp. One can use coconut oil mixed with dried amla pieces,” says Aithal.
She also recommends the use of natural shampoos as opposed to chemical-heavy shampoos. So look for those made with natural ingredients such as reetha, shikakai, amla, hibiscus flowers, fenugreek seeds, lemon and orange peels, henna etc. to wash your hair. “Reetha and shikakai contain natural surfactants called saponins, which is a natural cleaning agent. Also, the anti-microbial and anti-oxidant properties of reetha, shikakai and amla help to maintain healthy scalp,” she adds.
Melissa Hughe, Technical Head India, Schwarzkopf Professional, recommends sleeping on satin or silk as cotton pillowcases tend to dry out hair which is a particular issue for curly hair. “Use a volume-building product on the roots, then carefully blow-dry at the scalp to maintain lift. Use extreme care when styling, do not over-stress the hair. Use a styling product with a built-in conditioner to protect from heat and mechanical damage,” she says.
When you are drying your hair, you should put use a diffuser or air-dry; this will encourage a natural look while reducing the amount of direct heat on the hair. Also, always remember to brush down the hair from the roots to the tips.
If you want to use natural remedies, use aloe vera as it smoothens the hair and moisturises it. Take four teaspoons of aloe vera and mix with three teaspoons of coconut oil and plain yoghurt. Turn into a paste and apply on the scalp. Keep for 30 minutes and wash off with lukewarm water. You can also mash avocado and banana and use the paste for hydrated and shiny curls.
Here are a few dos and don’ts.
Don’t dry hair with a towel. Simply squeeze the excess water out of the hair – avoid rubbing and twisting to reduce the risk of damage, split-ends and frizz.
Don’t comb the hair when dry! Comb only when wet with a wide-toothed comb to de-tangle. When the hair is dry, use your fingers to define and separate the curl pattern, then use a styling product to hold this in place
Remember: Using the wrong styling product can make curls look overburdened or even greasy.
Wash hair with cold water as it helps make hair shinier, locks in moisture and reduces frizz.
