Engineers Day: 9 Engineers Who Followed Their Passion And Made It Big In Bollywood

Fun Fact: Every year India celebrates Engineers Day on September 15, the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Mokshagundam Vishweshvaraya, India’s most prolific civil engineer, dam builder, economist and statesman. Year 2019 will mark the 51st anniversary of the Engineers Day in India and 158th birth anniversary of Visvesvarayya.

While engineers are mostly depicted as nerds and geeks, they have given us some of our coolest stars. These Bollywood celebrities perfectly fit the description of ‘First do your engineering then follow your passion’. Here’s a list of 9 such engineers without whom Bollywood would be a lot less entertaining.

Vicky Kaushal has played different roles in movies like Uri, Manmarziyaan and Masaan among others. However he didn’t come to Mumbai to become an actor. He studied Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering at Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology. But the degree didn’t come of much use to him as he immediately began working as an assistant director after finishing college.

Kartik Aaryan

Kartik Aaryan made his name with the Pyaar Ka Punchnama series. He even starred in movies like Akash Vani and Luka Chuppi. He too came to Mumbai to pursue his engineering and ended up looking for modelling and acting jobs while completing his engineering in biotechnology.

Kriti Sanon

Kriti Sanon has worked in Hindi as well as Telugu films. With Telugu films like Dohchay under he belt, her popularity rose after doing films like Bareilly Ki Barfi and Kalank. However, acting was not her first career choice. She is quotes saying she never wanted to act. She had done her engineering in Information Technology from Jaypee Institute in Delhi.

R. Madhavan

Madhavan has been a popular face in Hindi and South Indian cinema for over a decade now.  shot to face playing the role of an aspiring engineer in 3 Idiots. His role of Manu in the Tanu Wed Manu series as well as films like Vikram Vedha and Ananda Punnakai, showcase his acting chops. Madhavan studied Electronics from Rajaram College in Kolhapur before turning to films.

4. Sushant Singh Rajput

Sushant Singh Rajput got his big break on the TV show Pavitra Rishta. He went on to do roles in films like Kedarnath, Sonchiriya and M.S. Dhoni to cement his place in Bollywood. Before pursuing acting he completed Mechanical Engineering from Delhi Technological University.

6. Taapsee Pannu

Engineering is a male dominated space and so it the list of engineers who quit to make it in Bollywood. Taapsee Pannu completed her Computer Science Engineering from Delhi before pursuing a career in modelling. After working in multiple ads she shifted focus to films in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malyalam cinema. She made her mark in Bollywood with movies like Naam Shabana, Mulk, Manmarziyaan and more recently Mission Mangal.

7. Sonu Sood

Sonu Sood has acted in films from Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Punjabi cinema. He recently played the role of antagonist in Simmba. He also played pivotal roles in movies like Paltan, Encounter Shankar and Ramaiya Vastavaiya. Before becoming an actor he completed Electrical Engineering from Nagpur.

8. Shankar Mahadevan

Shankar Mahadevan is a singer, composer and an actor in the Hindi and Marathi film industry. He played the role of a singer in the much acclaimed Marathi movie ‘Katyar Kaljat Ghasli‘. As a part of the music composer group with Ehsaan and Loy he has composed music for a number of films like Manikarnika and the Rock On series. Before all of this he had completed his Computer Science and Software Engineering from the Ramrao Adik Institute of Technology in Navi Mumbai.
