Dream11 Is IPL’s New Sponsor, But What About Its Chinese Connection?

The fantasy sports app is backed by Chinese giant, Tencent.

The 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) just refuses to escape the shadow of controversy, even as its new sponsor Dream11 has been found to have a Chinese connection as well. It should be known that the league’s previous sponsor, Vivo had bowed out recently following the backlash against Chinese companies in India owing to the Galwan valley clash from June 2020. Tencent, the Chinese company responsible for PUBG Mobile, happens to be one of the biggest investors in Dream11.

A source within the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) has said that Tencent holds less than 10% stake in Dream11. The company was awarded the sponsorship deal for IPL 2020 at Rs 222 crore. The firm managed to beat the likes of the Tata Group and edu-tech companies, Byju’s and Unacademy to acquire the deal. As opposed to the aforementioned amount, Vivo used to pay Rs 440 crore every year for sponsoring the IPL.
