Cyclone Amphan Intensifies Into Super Cyclone; West Bengal And Odisha On High Alert
Odisha and West Bengal brace themselves to tackle the super cyclone Amphan as PM Modi meets with NDMA to discuss containment strategies.
The cyclone ‘Amphan’ seen off the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a super cyclone by today evening. West Bengal and Odisha have been alerted as it is likely that the cyclone will make landfall on Wednesday. These two states are expected to experience heavy rainfall and high-velocity winds in the coming days. 17 natural disaster teams have been deployed in these regions to minimise casualties.
To know the exact intensity and prepare these states to tackle the calamity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair a meeting today with the Ministry of Home Affairs and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). Until then, Odisha’s chief minister Naveen Patnaik is making arrangements to evacuate one million people before the cyclone hits the region. The two states are all set to fight the cyclone and aim to have zero casualties.
