China’s Annual Congress Underway: New Security Laws Will Amplify In Hong Kong
One of the key points discussed was the implementation of controversial national security law in the state of Hong Kong.
China’s biggest political gathering begins! More than 3,000 delegates have assembled for the annual congress meeting or Two Sessions as it is also called. The conference started with all the officials led by Xi Jinping, the Chinese president observing two minutes of silence to mourn the loss of people during the COVID-19 pandemic. Changing the tradition for the first time, there will be no discussion about the GDP this year. This session will commence for seven days and will discuss various parameters and factors that the congress needs to focus on.
One of the key points discussed was the implementation of controversial national security law in the state of Hong Kong. This law was not adopted by the city-state councils with fears of curbing freedom of expression. After an initial failure back in 2002, the government now tries to bypass the Hong Kong legislature and implement this by themselves. Many activists have openly spoken against this law as it would bring the 100-year-old framework to an end. And surprisingly, the US President Donald Trump is ready to support the activists of Hong Kong once he gets all the details in this matter.
