Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro defended his administration’s record in protecting the Amazon rainforest, as he told the United Nations’ virtual meeting of global leaders that his country has been wrongly portrayed as an environmental villain. “We are victims of one of the most brutal disinformation campaigns about the Amazon and the Pantanal wetlands,” he said. The Brazilian administration has come under heavy fire once again after allegedly deliberately lit fires in the Pantanal wetlands started wreaking havoc in the region, inflicting great harm to the region’s rich animal life.

Speaking at the General Debate of the United Nations‘ General Assembly, Bolsonaro said, “The Brazilian Amazon is well-known to be very rich. That explains why international institutions support such campaigns based on ulterior interests, joined by self-serving and unpatriotic Brazilian associations, with the objective of harming the government and Brazil itself.” He also said that Brazil’s agribusiness sector has boosted agricultural exports to feed a growing global population.
