1. Roja - Chinna Chinna Ashalu

The musical maestro, the Mozart of Madras, Isai Puyal, the face of Indian music, the pride of India.

Born as Dileep Kumar on January 6, 1967, the young musician adopted Qadiryya Tariqa (a school of Sufism) and became Allarakha Rahman. Professionally known as AR Rahman, he has been honoured with six National Awards, two Academy Awards, two Grammy Awards, a  Golden Globe Award, a BAFTA Award. In 2010, the highest civilian honour was bestowed upon the maestro, with a Padma Bhushan. The musician has won millions of hearts, across borders, and has given us over 1600 musical gems, in his career spanning over three decades. And as he celebrates his 53rd birthday, we list the top eight songs that have been, and will be timeless classics!

Our first pick is from the 1992 multi-lingual film, Roja. Just like the Mani Ratnam directorial became an instant hit, its music hit the right chords with audiences. Even two decades later, the song Chinna Chinna Ashalu continues to bring a smile on our faces.

2. Roja - Rojave

When three legendary musicians – AR Rahman, Hariharan and SP Balasubramaniyam – came together, we got the beautiful and soulful song called Rojave. No matter what the situation, this utterly romantic track can instantly alter your mood.

3. OK Bangaram - Mental Madhilo

The 2015 film, OK Bangaram set new standards of storytelling, with its fresh approach and incredible music. The title track, named Mental Madhilo, is an enchanting mix of classical beats and electronic music.

4. Ye Maaya Chesave - Ee Hridayam

Every Telugu film fanatic has been in love with the Naga Chaitanya-Samantha Akkineni-starrer Ye Maaya Chesave. The song, Ee Hridayam is a simplistic yet powerful tale of falling in love.

5. Ye Maaya Chesave - Kundanapu Bomma

The song Kundanapu Bomma, from Ye Maaya Chesave, is the perfect personification of romance. Everyone wants someone who will think of them as the most beautiful of all. And this song describes that better than others.

6. Ye Maay Chesave -Vintunnava

When people cry listening to a song, we believe it’s the track that’s powerful enough to evoke emotions. One such composition, by the musical maestro, is Vintunnava. What makes this number more special is that even though non-Telugu speaking listeners might not comprehend the lyrics, the soul-stirring music will surely strike a chord with them and leave them teary-eyed.

7. Taal - Taal Se Taal Mila

AR Rahman’s songs have received the same appreciation, irrespective of the language barrier. Taal Se Taal Mila, from the 1999 film Taal is one such track that continues to be revered, thanks to its funky rhythm and foot-tapping beats.

8. Taal - Ishq Bina

Last but, definitely, not last on the list is Ishq Bina, from Taal. It encaptures the magic of Sufi music in a mainstream Bollywood-masala song.
