Bollywood has always had incredible female dancers, one better than the other. Today, on World Dance Day, let’s take a look at our favourite 10 from the list.
Dance is not just a physical activity, it’s much more than that. As Deepika Padukone once said, “Dance ek art hai art”! And Bollywood has always been blessed with such exceptional artists who have kept their audience captivated with their incredible dancing skills. Today, on World Dance Day 2021 (April 29), let’s take a look at some of our favourite dancers that Bollywood has ever had. This includes everyone from Vyjanthimala to Madhuri Dixit, to our latest addition to this list, Nora Fatehi.
Vyjanthimala is considered to be the Dancing Queen of Bollywood. The actress has ruled over the hearts of the audience with her expressions and grace. Vyjanthimala is a trained Bharatnatyam and Carnatic dancer. Her most iconic performances were in the songs ‘Daiyaa Re Daiyaa Re’, ‘Kaise Samjhaun’, ‘Hoton Main Aise Baat’ and more. One of Vyjanthimala most memorable roles was that of Chandramukhi in Devdas where she aced the role with her dance.
Waheeda Rehman is another veteran actress who was known for her effortless dancing skills. The actress has worked in several critically acclaimed Bengali, Tamil and Hindi films. Her most memorable performances were in the songs ‘Piya Tose Naina’ and ‘Paan Khaye Saiyaan Humaro’. Even at this age, the actress gave a tough competition to Sonam Kapoor in ‘Sasural Genda Phool’ in Delhi 6.
What can be said about Rekha’s dance that hasn’t be said before? She has constantly raised the bar for her contemporaries whether it’s with her acting or her graceful moves. The Umrao Jaan actress has aced her performances in legendary songs like ‘In Ankhon Ki Masti’, ‘Pardesiya’, ‘Salaam E Ishq Meri Jaan’ and more.
The Dream Girl of Bollywood is also an incredible dancer. Her amazing performance in Sholay’ ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ is appreciated even today. Hema Malini is a trained Bharatanatyam dancer and has added her personal touch to all her performances, whether it was in ‘Mere Naseeb Main’ or ‘Duniya Ka Mela’. She has continued with her stage performances even today.
Helen is the one actress who completely transformed the face of Bollywood. She was the only mainstream actress back then who ventured into the cabaret style of dance and ruled over the genre. Her most iconic performances were in ‘Piya Tu Ab To Aaja’, ‘Yeh Mera Dil’, ‘Mehbooba Mehbooba’ and ‘Mungada’.
Sridevi was one of the most popular and successful actresses, not only during her time but also when she made a comeback in the industry a few years ago. She was an exceptional dancer who could do justice to any dance performance she does. Her most memorable performances were, of course, ‘Hawa Hawai’, ‘Mere Haathon Mein’ and ‘Naino Mein Sapna’. She also aced her performance as an angry Nagin in ‘Main Teri Dushman, Dushman Tu Mera’.
Madhuri Dixit Nene
Madhuri Dixit Nene is truly the epitome of grace and elegance. Everyone remembers her legendary songs, ‘Ek Do Teen’, ‘Dhak Dhak Karne Laga’, ‘Choli Ke Peeche’. In fact, many actresses backed out of Nisha’s role in Dil Toh Pagal Hai as they didn’t want to face Madhuri in a dance-based movie. Madhuri also made a strong comeback in Aaja Nachle and then went on to judging dance reality shows as well.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
If Chandramukhi(Madhuri) was an exceptional dancer, Paro(Aishwarya) was nothing less. In fact, Aishwarya matched Madhuri step to step, making ‘Dola Re Dola’ one of the most popular songs of the time. Her performance in songs like ‘Nimbuda’ and ‘Krazy Kiya Re’ took the appeal of those films a notch higher.
What do we even say about Nora? Call her the ‘Dilbar’ girl or the ‘Taki Taki’ girl, Nora has stolen hearts with her sizzling dance moves. Nora became an overnight sensation with her incredible dancing style and made sure she increased the ‘garmi’ of the screen with her presense.
Katrina Kaif, who came in like this sweet little barbie doll has transformed her image in Bollywood, especially with her dancing skills. Starting from ‘Sheila Ki Jawani’ to her latest ‘Husn Parcham’ and her ‘Kamli’, ‘Mashallah’ and others in between. If anyone in Bollywood has mind-blowing moves, that’s definitely Katrina Kaif.
