Why Is China Afraid Of Gorkha Regiment In The Indian Army?
Chinese Embassy has asked an NGO to find out what was the socio-economic impact on Nepal amidst India-China standoff.
China has funded 12.7 lakh Nepalese rupees to a non-government organisation (NGO) based in Kathmandu, to carry out a study on the motivation behind the Gorkha community members joining the Indian Army. China has pulled down yet another dirty trick against India. It wants the Nepal NGO to audit and ask “Why are Gorkhas joining the Indian Army?” According to intelligence reports, the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu has asked the China Study Centre NGO to find out why people of Nepal are joining the Indian Army. They also asked, what was the socio-economic impact on Nepal amidst India-China standoff.
Recently, Nepal had called for a revision of the 1947 tripartite agreement on Gorkha soldiers claiming it has become redundant and urged the United Kingdom and India to discuss the issue. Nepal Foreign Minister Pradeep Kumar Gyawali said, “Gorkha recruitment is a legacy of the past. It has various aspects. It opened the window for Nepali youths to go abroad. It created a lot of jobs in the society in the past but in the present context, some provisions in the agreement are questionable. So we start discussions on its various objectionable aspects.”
