When Will Congress Look Beyond The Gandhis?
Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar talks about the CWC meeting and busts myths about the party’s alleged dependency on the Gandhi leadership
After the seven-hour long Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting yesterday, Sonia Gandhi was back as interim president of the party. Congress leaders Mani Shankar Aiyar and Sanjay Jha spoke to a channel following this latest development.
Aiyar said that he was ready to look beyond the Gandhis as leaders. Referring to the letter written by stalwarts of the Congress, he said that the CWC extensively deliberated on it yesterday. He further stated that there will be no suspension of the signatories of the document from the working committee, leave alone from the party. According to the politician, it is only for the Congress to determine their future leadership and not the media’s or the Bharatiya Janata Party’s business.
Sanjay Jha called yesterday’s meeting a significant triumph for those who want to see a change in the party. The former national spokesperson said that the members need to be galvanized to take on the opposition and the letter echoed this need to have a vigilant leader on board. Jha agreed that the CWC elections should have been conducted much earlier but said that it will happen soon, where a new president will be elected by a freshly elected CWC.
Aiyar concluded by saying that the party fora enable healthy discussions, also adding that the Congress doesn’t need to change, but rather go back to its original principles.
