With the holy days of Navratri, the celebrations of several Hindu festivals begin around the country. In the multi-lingual and multi-cultural country of India, there are different ways to celebrate all the festivals. Navratri ends with an auspicious festival of Dussehra. However, in some parts of India, Dussehra is a week-long celebration with different festivities and Pooja. Take a look at this week-long celebration that takes place in Kullu, Himachal Pradesh.
This year, the celebrations of Dussehra festival kick-started on October 25 in Kullu. The festivals started with a Pooja with several people reciting mantras in front of Lord Krishna. These celebrations also include locals playing musical instruments. In Kullu, Lord Krishna is worshipped as Lord Raghunath and a Rath Yatra is carried out on the streets of Kullu with hundreds of people participating in this Yatra.
This Rath Yatra has a big decorated ‘Rath’ made for Lord Raghunath and the idol of Lord Raghunath is kept on the ‘Rath’ with several floral decorations around it. In this Yatra, a special ceremony is carried where a person is dressed in their local traditional dress who leads the Yatra and other people follow him. The Rath Yatra goes around the city with people blowing trumpets all around. This Yatra is also consist of the army who march during the Yatra.
Lord Raghunath’s ‘Rath’ is tied up with big ropes and people who participate in this Yatra pull the ropes to move the Rath. This fest is celebrated with a lot of religious beliefs among the locals in Kullu. There is a distribution of food among the locals during this Yatra. Several offerings are served to Lord Raghunath during these Dussehra celebrations.
